Default Problem with delayed emails - 07-06-2007, 01:46 PM

All;

I have the 8703e with Sprint service running v4.1.0.384 handheld software. I have two email accounts setup with BIS.

Gmail - no issues to report.
Verizon.net - it seems that email is very delayed with this account. Often emails come in spurts (2-3 at a time) and other times, it could take upwards of 10-15 minutes to receive an email on my berry that my outlook/outlook express has already received.

Any ideas?

Depending on the accounts it will only poll every 15 to 20 minutes. I am sure someone else can explain why some are instant and others must wait for the poll.

Those that are instant have paid/worked with RIM to make them so.

Others are not instant to prevent server hammering and congestion

correct. certain email servers have agreements with RIM to provide instant delivery (Gmail, Yahoo ), where as all other services are accessed every 10-15 mins. if you receive lots of emails, RIM's servers know to check more often and it will check every 5 mins or so. if you think this is a pain and you need instant delivery, you might want to consider creating a separate Gmail and forwarding the email from those other accounts to that account, or have Gmail use it's POP3 retrieval to get email from those accounts.

the delay isn't much of a problem for me because I receive SO many emails a day from my college IMAP account, that it's practically instant delivery (a few mins)

No they don't. If you send an email through a BIS account it will re-poll after 5 mins then return to the 15 minute cycle. It does not learn from email load.

if you receive a lot of emails, it checks more often for you. that is essentially what i said. it doesn't "learn" and always check that often for you permanently, but based on your usuage and the traffic on your account, it checks more often for you for an appropriate time

It has nothing to do with incoming email. It has everything to do with outgoing email. It checks appx 5 minutes after the message is sent to see if there was a quick reply. It could have been 4 hours since your last incoming. The system is essentially oblivious to the level of messages you are receiving.

You're right, what would a former developer at RIM know compared to you? Apparently nothing. I'll go make some calls I guess. Thanks for the suggestion.
