Thanks John.

I have a new issue now. I try to activate my mails and I receive the following message:

Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

What should I do?

Thanks again!

Nevermind. I went to my providers website and has the service books sent to my device and all Ok now!

I did... and no luck so far

What I did was register the device and then I went to the web site and had the service books sent to my device.

Here's some news for everyone on the upgrade.

8700r Rogers, Toronto, Canada.

Lots of things have changed. Overall rating 4.
I'm going to downgrade. I will have to figure out to do that. If anyone knows, post it up.

Here I go,

-some ringtones are now missing, ie, Bike Horn. (I liked that one!)
-rim runs very very slow. I think too slow.
-battery runs down much faster. too fast. disappointment.
-scrolling, access, search all much slower.
-this upgrade breaks this 8700 rim.
-the 8700 is too slow to run this OS.
-locations of everything has slight changes. spent some time to locate all the key areas for adjustments
-certain functions changed, as per lock.
-I think the main reason was to complete with the iphone and jazz up the interface. In fact it's a failure due to the overhead of the OS, the 8700 runs too slow for me. THERE IS NO SPEEDUP, JUST SLOW DOWN.
-things like flashing email icons now... i don't need.
-zen interface operational changes. I don't like the new features. They took most of them out.
-I figure the reason for this upgrade is to look and feel like the newer models, such as curve etc. But it fails, since the 8700 can't push this OS well.

ADVISE.. DO NOT UPGRADE.

This upgrade has me now considering to downgrade and/or move to the new 8300 model with GPS/camera etc. If I can downgrade and it's successful, I'll keep the 8700r a bit longer. But this OS breaks the rim 8700.

Sorry for the rant, but it disppointed so much.
Be prepared to let the upgrade run for about one and a half hours.

The people at rim did not review the operational speed on the 8700 when considering this upgrade.

I'll go as far as to say it BRICKS the rim. I don't like it at 4.2, moving down.

Cheers everyone.
I signed up to let everyone know what you are getting into here.

There are some neat upgrades, and tricks but not worth the other issues it brings.

I wouldn't say it bricks the 8700. It will seem slow initially, but it will pick up. It does take some getting used to, though.

BTW.

The process to downgrade,

Be sure to goto start, add/remove rim desktop software 4.2 and rim handheld software 4.2

then download the desktop software 4.2 again.
then download the handheld 4.1 software.

Then double click on reloader (after starting DT sofware.
click add other handheld code.

...the wheels are rolling.
you are now downgrading the older handheld code.

I'll report later how it went.
Cheers!
Bill.

Got the downgrade to work first time.

Much happier. ALL is good.

My 8700 rim and yours should stay with 4.1.
The speed is much better. 4.2 will S L O W you down.

Ok I'd like to try upgrading to v4.2 but will all my e-mail settings still be the same. Will I still receive e-mail from my companies server or will I have to work with my IT dept to reenter my settings once I upgrade? It is currently sync'd with Outlook via company server.
Thanks for the help.

Default Problems importing browser bookmarks in folders - 09-17-2007, 08:22 PM

I have folders with bookmarks that I'm trying to migrate from 4.1, but all of the links in folders get dropped out when I restore that database into 4.2. I've tried restoring a single database and a complete backup, and it doesn't seem to change anything.

Any hints?

Is it just me or are there LESS themes with 2.4 on the 8707's?

And is it normal to have to perform a re-activation afterwards?

Cheers

There will be fewer themes if you didn't edit the Blackberry.alx file before upgrading.

Yes, it's normal to have to perform a BES activation after the upgrade.

Problems with this release (I upgraded to it from 4.1)

1) Ringer volume is noticeable lower (the alarm isn't loud enough to wake me up anymore)
2) Slower response time on switching apps (I see the hourglass much more often)
3) GTalk throws a folder hierarchy exception now before it logs out (under 4.1 it used to just log out so perhaps this is an undocumented feature :->)
4) The keyboard backlight no longer turns on when the backlight is set for automatic (but the lcd backlight works correctly). I've gotten around this but just leaving the backlight on.
5) The profile randomly switches to vibrate mode after about 36 hours (this is a blocker bug in my opinion)
6) The web browers can't parse google's xml on the google.com/ig google reader module. The browser does render forms now so I'm ok with this tradeoff.

In the end I would discourage people from this upgrade until these issues are resolved (especially the profile, backlight and volume issue). Does anyone know of a changelog for the OS updates?
