Default Install google maps thru desktop manager - 08-11-2007, 07:09 PM

I am having a lot of trouble downloading anything OTA with my 8703. I think the company may have that blocked, so I can't download google maps. Where can I find the .alx file to download onto my laptop and add it to the blackberry thru desktop manager?
thanks!

Its not the 8703e. Go to Maps GPS forum and view "google maps V1.60 available" and see my thread. I have an 8703e and have downloaded Ygo and empower insta spell today. I deleted my google maps yesterday to install the newest version. For two days I have not been able to download google maps. Its the link. Are you getting Error 404 Not Found? I sent an email to google about the problem.

It's not usually necessary to uninstall the old Google Maps before downloading the new. I know I'm a little late for your current problem but maybe keep that in mind for next time.

Yeah I shouldn't have deleted google maps. Just downloaded new version. Well I do learn the hard way. As of yet no word on the Error 404. I still can't download though. Other people have downloaded this on 4.2 OS. I don't know if its and issue with the 8703 or 4.1. Which carrier are you with?

I'm with Verizon. I get that error for several things I am trying to download. I did successfully download gmail. I can't figure out why it works sometimes and not others.

I have gmail as well. Tryed to install it just to see what happens and it let me. I also installed empower instaspell and Ygo from yahoo. The only thing that I can't seem to download is google maps. And it seems to be an issue only with the 8703. Other people are downloading it with 4.2 OS I'd like to hear from anyone that has had luck downloading this with 4.1. We know its not a carrier issue now because I have sprint. Let's hope that this is just a weekend glitch. But if someone else with 4.1 OS can try and then report that would be great.

John,

I saw the other thread "Google Maps here for 8800" and a user was talking about deleting modules. I went under Options-Advanced Option-Modules and I have something that looks like it might be from google maps. It looks like- gm_8703_V4_0_L1. Do you know if this is from google maps? If it is I will delete and try and reinstall V1.6. Thanks

Just installed opera mini and went to google.com/gmm. I was abl to install google maps V1.6 through Opera. But the icon that use to be a compass now looks like a screen "just like gcal sync. When I click on icon I get a error messege". Error starting gmaps $2d160 $2dm2_L1" and so on. This leads me to believe google has not configured maps for the 8703.

It appears that Google has not yet posted v1.6 for the 8703e -- you can download v1.54 from the following link (OTA):

http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.5....1&v er=v1.5.4

FYI -- I took the link that results in 404 errors, and I globally substituted "1.5.4" for "1.6.0" (two occurrences).

Historically, it has not been possible to install apps using Opera Mini.

I'd like to know how you got Opera mini on your 8703e. It will not work on mine. When I go to the link the install link never shows up on the web page no matter which link I click.

Google maps gives me the same 404 error. I didn't get rid of the previous version so it still works. I'll wait and see if it's needed or not before trying again.

I've never had a problem installing Opera mini on my 8703e. I just googled Opera Mini went to there site and clicked on download high memory Version. But john I should clarify after installing Opera Mini I was able to install Maps but Opera did envoke the BB browser but for some reason I could download. Where I wasn't able to without Opera. Even though the Icon wasn't the same and got another Error.

Sounds coincidental... There's nothing that an OM install does that would enable downloading.

Still not fixed -- the OTA v1.6.1 download produces the following error:

"Error starting gmaps8703_v4_1_L1: Class 'net.rim.device.api.system.CoverageInfo' not found"

How did you originally contact Google? You may want to follow up with them...

I downloaded and installed it on my 8820. Got this error message during loading the licence agreement: supplementary service error: Facility not supported Any clue how to get rid of this? Never saw this message before on previous releases (mainly 1.54 and 1.58 if I am not wrong) on my 8800 or 8100.

On retrying it passed the hurdle, and now works.... with this same message reappearing occasionally. -- Thank you very much. I had been struggling for several days downloading OTA, deleting, restarting with version 1.6.1

Thanks again for the precious help.

The error message supplementary service error: Facility not supported is now occurring all the time... and the kb-meter remains at 0. Downloaded the application OTA, same issue.

Uninstalls and re installs did not make any change.

Thanks

  1. You only need the first file you pointed to.
  2. download the zipped file and unzip it.
  3. Connect your Blackberry to the PC,
  4. In Desktop Manager (on the PC) click on the icon "application Loader"
  5. Click "Next"
  6. Click on the "add" button
  7. Find the file gmm_160.alx in the directory where you placed the unzipped file you downloaded earlier
  8. Click on Next
  9. Click on Finish

This should play the trick. Once it has finished your BlackBerry should reboot and the application will then appear on your screen.

The 8703 is not included in that .zip file.

If you have a data plan you can use the following link in your BBBrowser:

http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.5.4/L1/gmaps-BlackBerry-8703_v4_1_L1.jad?make=BlackBerry&model=8703+v4+1&v er=v1.5.4
