Anyone Experience this Browser Issue-8830? -
10-21-2007, 10:16 PM
Hello,
Has anyone received the message while browsing stating that the page is not available because you are not in a area with Internet Coverage (something like that referring you lost signal) then the Internet is no longer available? I could understand this when I lose signal but when I do get it back, I should be able proceed when clicking the link again. Instead EVERYTIME, I have to close the browser, disable the wireless connection, enable it then I'm able to browse again. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Currently the default browser is "Internet"

I am getting this on a regular basis. I saw the same behavior on both the Verizon 8830 and my current Sprint 8830.
When I look at the signal strength from the home screen, the bars are there but there are no letters. When that happens, I can "Hide" the browser, go into Manage Connections, turn off the "Mobile Network", wait for the signal meter to indicate OFF. Then I turn on the Mobile Network. It will then reconnect and I can go back to the browser and continue from where I left off.
Big pain in the neck

I have the exact same problem on sprint's network. Only web browsing causes this for me, doesnt matter if i use the BB browser or the opera browser. When i lose the ev connection, it would just display the signal strength, no letters (1x, 1X, 1XEV) and the BB browser will not work, but opera mini still works tho. i've only had my 8830 for 4 days now, hopefully they fix this with a os update.

I just talked to RIM about this and they are totally unaware of it. Hopefully we can make some headway on it.

As someone mentioned. It seems to be triggered by web browser activity. weird.

Hmmmm
You are not able to close the application and reopen it in a better coverage area?

I've run into this also. Instead of closing the app, toggling wireless on/off, then going back into the browser, I just switch out to my desktop and toggle wireless. Does the trick for me.
As far as re-opening the app in a better coverage area, I think you're missing the point. It sounds as though you're suggesting physically moving to another location. If you're using the BB for business, although that might work, it's a rather poor option.

Another data point...
Today I did most of my browsing with Opera Mini 4 Beta 2. I didn't have any problems. When I went back to the built-in browser, I lost connection. This is a REAL issue and appears to be related to the BlackBerry browser or how it interacts with the IP stack.

Should have pointed out that I'm having the problem on an 8830. Have a few other users with the same device but they've reported no problems.

Same issue here on a Sprint 8830. It "smells" like a bug to me. No other phone (including my old 8703e) seemed to lose its data connectivity like this 8830, and I have years of experience in my location.
My workaround may be simpler than the ones described above. Rather than exiting the browser or toggling the network connection, I simply hit the green Phone button and dial "*18". That does a Sprint tower resync (and the connection hangs up automatically, so you don't need to wait for it.) Usually, but not always, it resolve the problem immediately. Back to the browser, hit "OK", and off I go...
I have been wondering whether this has anything to do with an out-of-date EVDO PRL (on Sprint, obviously). I know for certain that mine is out of date. Guess I'll get them to flag me for an update and see if that lessens the problem for me.

More weirdness...
I setup the Sprint 8830 Bluetooth connection to my laptop so I don't need to use the USB cable to use the 8830 as a modem.
Watching the signal meter and it's letters, I am seeing the same behavior where it is bouncing around between 1X, 1XEV, and no letters at all while I am connected. What is strange is when there are no letters but signal bars, I am still able to browse the net from the laptop while using the 8830 as a modem (All other network connections on the laptop are disabled, I triple checked).
If, while still connected as a modem, If I go to the browser, I get the "You are not currently in an area that can handle data communications" message when there are no letters next to the signal meter. When the letters are there then I get a message about not using the browser when connected as a modem.
All the while the internet connection keeps working with active surfing.
Definitely seems to be a bug in the BlackBerry software and not a problem with the Sprint network.

This happens to me as well, but I don't need to turn off the connections and then turn them back on. Usually within 5 minutes (or less) the data services are back and the browsing works fine.
I always figured it was because Sprint has horrible service at my house (I usually force my non-BB phones into roaming mode at home), but maybe there are other issues.
Unlike brittonx I am not able to browse with no letters, but I can browse fine with lower case letters, which I didn't think was supposed to be possible.

It's important to note, I cannot browse directly on the Blackberry when there are no letters. What I can do is browse on a laptop that is using the Blackberry as a modem when there are no bars.
