LED Issues -
10-22-2007, 12:30 PM
I just got my new Verizon 8830 after having used the model 7130 for a couple of years. One thing has me stumped. Most of the time the LED flashes green when I have no new message, red when I have new messages, and blue when bluetooth is enabled. Sometimes, however, the LED doesn't flash at all and the LED simply is off.
This never happened on my 7130 and is very inconvenient, since I know I don't have new messages when the LED flashes green.
Any suggestions?

Green = Signal present
Red = New message or alert
Blue = Bluetooth enabled
Orange/Yellow = below 15% battery charge

I understand what the colors mean. The only thing I can take from this is that if no color is flashing then there is no signal present. But that is not the case, as there is a signal yet no flashing LED.

Check your alert status.
Menu>options>Screen/Keyboard>LED COverage Indicator "is it On or Off"
I think that after a certain period of inactivity it quites flashing.

If the coverage indicator is set to ON, it will always flash IF a signal is present.

The setting is on, so I'll have to check to make sure I really have a signal when the light isn't flashing. Frankly, I've never noticed it not flashing on other BBs before, but maybe I just wasn't being that observant. Thanks.

I think what unboringguy is saying, is that even though there is coverage, sometimes the coverage LED (green) does not blink.
I run into this fairly often, so to me: blinking green = coverage, not blinking green = maybe coverage, or maybe not.
For example, I might be holding my phone and looking at it, and the green led is not blinking. But if I go to my options and turn it off, and then turn it back on -- without having moved the phone 3 inches -- I can hardly believe that I "suddenly" moved into a coverage area within a 10 second period where the phone moved 3 inches physically (all the while with full EDGE and 4+ bars).
It seems to be more that some other LED status light did not "return control" to the coverage indicator LED. That might be a 3rd party application, such as Blackberry Alerts (which, yes I do run) or it might be a missed phone call (which blinks red), and after checking the call log, the red LED indicator goes off but the green LED does not go back on like one would think it should.
Something like that, is what I think the OP is describing. If/when it bothers me, I turn it off and then on. I've seen it come back on by itself before; that is, I go to sleep with the indicator off (not set to off, just that it wasn't blinking) and when I wake up, it's back on even though it didn't move all night. Or just as often as not, it didn't return to blinking green sometime overnight.

I couldn't have said it any better and that is also what I was thinking the OP meant. I notice it also with my 8830 and I also noted it with my 7100i.
I always assumed that it was the network dropping me momentarily or maybe it was just in a maintenance mode or the like. I tried to make a call once without a blinking green and it worked just fine and bounced back to blinking when I dialed out.
I do think it a network thing and not a phone thing myself.

Klotar did a nice job restating my issue. This problem occurs frequently first thing in the morning when my "auto-on" kicks in. The BB is sitting on the dresser and then automatically turns on. It clearly has a signal, and it has received emails, the indicator light simply does not flash.

I simply turned off the signal and bluetooth alerts. They're not necessary (IMO), and the device now operates similarly to my older Blackberry devices.

This is an issue I've noticed with both my 8703 and 8830. Sometimes, randomly, the green "service" LED just stops flashing. The signal is 100% strong, there has been no interruption in service, but it just happens. If I wit, it will eventually start blinking green again at some point.
I just assumed it was something that just happened once in a while....

I have an issue with the red LED light: If I don't check new messages within a certain interval of time, the red LED message alert stops flashing. Not all the time, but some of the time. I chalk it up to imperfect technology. It doesn't really matter to me, since I habitually check my BB every 30 minutes or so "just in case"...
I like the green coverage LED, but do not use it because I keep my BB on my night stand, and leave it on all night (it's my only phone). That sucker is BRIGHT in the middle of the night. I wish you could set on and off times for the indicators, similar to the timers for the handset.

No, it's not imperfect technology, rather the BB is designed that way. What you are seeing...the red flashing led turning green after a period of time...is completely normal. It was that way on my 7130e, 8703e and now with my 8830.

^^true what Nickstr says. The red "new" message alert indicator does revert to green (or none) after about 15-20 minutes--by design, not by design flaw.

Welcome to the BBForums, Bored_Chairman.
1. Leave the battery out about an hour, reinsert, reboot and see if it continues. If so, you need
2. How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder? - BlackBerryFAQ
Good luck.
