Default local maps? - 10-28-2007, 10:57 AM

Hi,

New to the forum but not new to forums. I obviously took some time reading all I could having just purchased an 8820 but there's so much information, you all know it's easier to just pop the question

It's an AT&T device which I unlocked so I can use it with Fido. I also used the instructions found on this site to unlock the BB Maps and got it working. Also tried Nav4All and Google maps. All work with GPS without any issues, I love it.

BUT! Here's my concern. It doesn't work without a data connection and data plans are awfully expensive around here. I'd like to be able to install some kind of maps locally (on the microSD) and use that with the GPS for navigation. Can it be done? Even if it's not possible right now, can I expect that to be a future feature?

TIA

NVM. I think I got my answer here, which kinda sux. So, basically I'm stuck paying for data transfer in order to be able to use GPS navigation on my BB when it has the potential and ability to be used just like a hand-held gps... All that's missing are locally installed maps

You got it. You need a BB dataplan to use any of the map programs as they only load the portion of the map they currently need and then keep refreshing via the data connection.

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830: BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Unfortunately, you are somewhat limited from using many of your device's features without a data plan.

if you want to do that, get yourself a nokia n95. I have been a BB user for years but gps can be loaded on the micro sd in that unit and it comes with a five mp camera, 30 fps video and wifi all in one. The email functions are terrible but it will do what you want
