Default Upgraded OS, but BBMaps not showing, no other visual changes? - 11-23-2007, 10:30 PM

I just upgraded my unlocked AAT&T 8820 OS to the latest one listed here in the forum (thanks to John Clark et al for the clarifications in my other OS thread), and I noticed that one of the things included in this version of the OS was BBMaps. Unfortunately BBMaps isn't showing up anywhere in my UI, and the UI (theme?) looks exactly the same as it did before I upgraded, which I didn't expect since it's an AT&T theme.

The details in the Options->About page show that the BB has definitely been upgraded, but why I can't I see BBMaps and is it normal that my UI looks exactly the same as before even though the OS is new?

I've double checked the LBS.alx file and I definitely removed the vendorID list, and BBMaps 1.2.26 is shown as being loaded on the device Options->Advanced->Applications list.

I don't have a BB data plan (BES activating Monday), but I don't see why that would prevent the icon from showing up, since the Google Maps application displays fine (even though it doesn't work since I don't have a data plan).

Any ideas? And does anyone know if there's a newer BBMaps version available for the 8820?

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the GPS hardware itself seems to be working since it gives me accurate co-ordinates when I hit Refresh GPS under Options->Advanced->GPS.

Did you try hit ALT and click track ball at the same time to show all icon?

The original ALX

<!-- For 8800 series, hide the icon for Cingular (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="~102|124|137|119|162|142|183|147|217|17 5" series="8800">

and change to

<!-- For 8800 series, hide the icon for Cingular (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0" series="8800">

Also the ALX is pointed this file

net_rim_bb_lbs_ribbon.cod
net_rim_bb_lbs.cod
net_rim_bb_lbs_api.cod
net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod
net_rim_bb_lbs_resource_en.cod

Make sure you can locate them in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8800-v4.2.1.108_P2.3.0.85\Java

If all the above looks fine, you might need a wipe and reload the OS, I would also recommend reload the desktop manager, or maybe a different version of OS.

Just FYI, I have the latest OS for my 8800 and the bbmap version is 1.1.35

I'm missing some of the language files in my OS, but you may have found the problem in that I'm also missing:

net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod

Where would I be able to find this file? It's strange that it's not in that OS distro!

EDIT: It may be that the new BBMaps included in my OS doesn't need that file anymore, but it sounds like a pretty important component.

The LBS.ALX language file is part of my chinese OS, so it might not apply to you, what you need to do is open up LBS.alx file with notepad and look for all the net_rim_bb_lbs_xxxxxxxx file that it refer to, and make sure it is inside

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8800-v4.2.1.108_P2.3.0.85\Java

All OS is different, you need the LBS.ALX to match what's inside the JAVA folder. My post above is just an example.

If any COD file is missing, you need to re-install the OS, of course you can do the mix and match manually, but that might give you more problem that what you have now.

If you want to try this file
net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod
I can email it to you, but check inside LBS first.

I would say it would just be easier to download the version from http://mobile.blackberry.com

Indeed John, however you can't do that without a data plan (and I wasn't able to get the web-based ActiveX installer to make it past 7%) so I'm trying to figure this out for the folks out there who are hoping to get by with Wi-Fi only.

You need to go back to your LBS.alx and make sure you got all the vendor codes out of there.

Also, what good is BBMaps without a data plan? I don't think you can get BBMap info without a data plan, even with wifi anyway.

That makes sense but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to that question, and since a couple of BB services work without data plans I figured it was worth a shot. Maybe someone smarter than me can figure it out definitively!
