Why no multiple snooze options for calander alerts? -
02-13-2008, 01:47 AM
I hate the fact that there are not multiple snooze options when a calander alert goes off. I was used to WM having 5 or 6 snooze options for calander events. (Not that I'll EVER go back to WM, overall it sucks!) And not just in the calander event screen itself, when you create the event. But what I mean is when the alarm event pops up. Why can't I choose the snooze amount from a list of say 5min. 15min. 30 1hr. 2hr. 1 day. etc.... you get the idea, maybe 5 options, user defined even. This has to be a really easy update. Any work arounds? 3rd party apps. to solve this?

My opinion: The reason is that it is assumed if you enter a calendar event it is a true event. If the time or date changes, then you edit the entry, not snooze it. Just my opinion.
Same for tasks. You enter a tasks because it is a real task an you need to drop what you are doing and take care of the task. If you can't drop what you are doing that second, you snooze the task and wrap up what you are doing ASAP. My opinion.

I agree with you, for the way you use calanders and tasks, but that's just it, that's how you and probably one group of people use it. I don't believe the phone would be as succesful as it is, had it only been designed for one group of people to use in one way. It needs to be adaptable for various uses, to some degree. And this is a seeming very simple fix, and I think just as important to a whole other group of people.
Peace!

On my 8830, I have the Snooze option available to me for Calendar reminders. I am on BES and running 4.2.2.176:
Calendar Options:
Default Reminder - 30 minutes
Snooze - 10 minutes
When my Calendar reminder/alert goes off, I have the option to Open, Dismiss, or Snooze for 10 minutes.

I agree with AI it has been this way since the original BB. It must not be that big of a deal because they have never changed it. I am not a procrastinator if I hit snooze thats what I want to do snooze. If I need more time I change the calendar entry. I only enter tasks and calendar entry's for events that have to happen at a certain time and if the event changes I move it to the correct time.

I suppose this is the key component. I may be resistant to conform to the norm, so to speak. Yet I can conseed that I may need to learn a new way to use what I have available. I'm not new to handhelds, PDA, WM, Palm, but I am new to Blackberry. Undoubtedly, it is even in my short time with it, the undesputed winner in this market, not that that needs to be stated amongst this crowd.

There's some logic here, from my perspective. Why set an alert if you are going to snooze over and over again, or snooze for an hour, a day, multiple days or a week . . . or a month? If it doesn't really deserve an alert, then it doesn't deserve an alert. It's like keeping a do list with dozens of tasks you know you are never going to do. Should RIM program in options for what amounts to inefficient behavior just because that's what a lot of people do? Again, just my opinion.

And think of the time you save not having to reach for the BB just to snooze the alert.
Or not reach for it but have to interupt a great game of brick breaker for an alert lol

Just wondering if anyone had discovered an app for this.
I used this on my Q mostly for birthdays/anniversaries, set them with a 1 week reminder and snooze daily just to remind myself they are arriving.

I like the multiple snooze option WM offers. Some may consider it "inefficient" but I feel like it is the best way to work with certain tasks. When I am at work I may be with a client yet have a task set for something I need to get done in short while. Yes, I appreciate the reminder right then, but I need to tap snooze and continue with my current obligation. It is very helpful to be able to reset the reminder for 5, 15, 30 minutes...etc. This way I can continue and not worry that it will be forgotten.
Tasks are just tasks...appointments are appointments. If I need to make it to an appointment by 3pm I am there at 2:50pm. If I set a task I want it done at the time I set it for, *if possible,* but will delay it if circumstance demands it.

Maybe this is getting too deep into a philosophical discussion on calendars and tasks but for me, anything I put into the calendar represents a hardstop from whatever I am doing unless I just choose to skip it and/or reschedule.
I wonder if what you are really looking for is a simple reminder/alarm app. On the Treo, I used BugMe which was nothing more than an alarm-able notepad, very useful. For reminders of untimed activities, I use ideaMatrix on the Blackberry and set an alert to a note. Once the alert goes off, you can choose right away when the next alert should go off. It's excellent for those shopping list reminders so I can snooze it for another time when I know I'll be at the market for sure. Hope this helps.

I use TodoMatrix more than the actual calendar... It has multiple choices for snoozing alerts.

Life without real snooze options stinks -
06-10-2008, 02:58 PM
Let's face it, although Palm is dead BB can't hold a candle to the PIM features of a Treo. While I was forced to move to BB, and I have now come to like it, I still miss certain aspects of my Treo. There was a great 3rd party program called DateBk that could do everything Outlook calendar could, including a snooze-until option. That's the feature I really miss. Some events require me to travel somewhere (and others are super important) so I need more prep time, and for those events I set a longer alarm time. It is then convenient to tell the device to snooze until 5 minutes (or 10, 20, 30) before the event. (If I have an early morning meeting I might set an alarm for the night before and then tell the device to snooze until 30 minutes before the real meeting time.)
Once you have this feature it becomes indispensible. (It's the single reason I resisted my company on switching to BB.) For those of you debating whether it is a valuable feature, if you never use it what do you care? Some of us would like it and it would be simple for RIM to add. It would make the BB even more usable so why not support us?
Otherwise, are there any 3rd party calendar options for BB or is it still basically a locked OS?

I am new to the BB too and was on WM for the last few years and am also REALLY missing the snooze options!! I'll subsribe to this thread in the hopes that someone will offer a work around or 3rd party add-on.
We can discuss all day how we use it, but for those of us that like the way we organize (or procrastinate) it makes a HUGE difference, I especially like the post above from the person that does daily reminders for a birthday coming up, I used to do the exact same thing.
Hope someone reads this that can offer more suggestions/help.

You should take a look at ToDoMatrix. While you can only set three different alerts -- for a B-Day that might be -1 week, -2 days, and when you need to leave for the party, you can snooze each of these alerts to your hearts content. This is, however, more of a task-oriented program than a calendar per se, but it plugs a nice hole between Outlook simple tasks and a full-blown project manager. Your small projects can be planned out and have multiple specific functional tasks.

I diasagree that you're doing something wrong if you're continually snoozing something. Some jobs need reminders but they don't have to be done immediately. Here's an example of a situation where the current interface is inadequate:
I have a reminder set to buy something on the way somewhere, and one to post a letter. Because I don't know exactly when I'll be passing the place where these need to be done (late train, heavy traffic, etc), these need to be set to the earliest possible time just in case the trip is quick.
Then I'm travelling and I hear the reminders go off, but can't attend to them. Then I get a phone call and have to quickly deal with layers of reminders. (Actually I can answer the call, but can't hang up till the reminders are gone.)
I can't dismiss them - what if I forget them in half an hour when the time is right to do them? I can't open them and reschedule them, it takes so long the caller will have hung up. I can snooze them, but only for 5 minutes (or whatever it's set to), and they're likely to go off again while I'm on the call, and they'll all go off at the same time.
To deal with this situation, I can see these options being useful:
- snooze for various times, say 5, 10, 30, 60 minutes
- snooze till after call
- snooze all (for various times)
- reschedule all (for various times)
The last option would add an increment to the scheduled time rather than snoozing it. One problem with snoozing is that if you accidentally dismiss it later, it can be hard to know what you just dismissed.
All these options would appear below the current list, so they wouldn't bother people who don't work this way.
It would also be nice to be able to call up a list of events that are currently snoozed.

My hope is that Pocket Informant will fix this inherent design flaw. Its clear to me and others I work with that you should be able to snooze the meeting more than minutes. I schedule alarms to pop up and remind me days in advance and I expect it to work the way I work. I need to snooze it out a day or two and pop up when needed again. I will say my BB experience overall has been really great compared to WinMobile side but that doesn't change my view on the calendar snooze issue.
