Question BB8820 battery wearing out too fast. - 02-20-2008, 05:16 AM

Hi guys;

I've bought myself a new BB8820 in the beginning of januari. The first couple of charges I've let it stay plugged in after the battery was charged fully (I read somewhere this would benefit my battery's life span). After those charges I started charging when the battery was lower than 30% or in extreme cases when the "battery low" warning appeared on my display.

Since the beginning of this week (when I unlocked the BB maps application) my battery is just draining insanely; I fully charged it this night; unplugged it from the charger 6 hours ago and already I'm down to 75% battery life.
I did not leave any application open (I checked this) and I only made like 2 phone calls of 5 minutes today.
Prior to this I charged it on sunday and it ran out on tuesday night and you should know that in between this it had been connected to my desktop for several hours when working on the unlocking of the BBmaps.

Is this a common issue for the BB8820 or is my battery just dead?

Thank you in advance for your answer;

Miguel

My 8820 can go days between charges. The 8820 has excellent battery life. SO you either have something running in the background or your device is defective. I am betting you have something running. You, yourself said that when you unlocked BB Maps your battery started draining "insanely"! So what do you think!

Also L-Ion batteries do not like to be run to near empty before charging, this will only shorten the life of the battery.

It indeed was my first bet as well that something would run in the background.
But when I check ( with alt + esc ) all I see is: phone, messages, homescreen, bb messenger, browser (not on an active webpage).
Is there another way to check the running processes?

I noticed my 8820 running down awfully fast the other day. No 3rd party apps open. Pulled the battery for a few minutes, and after the next charge everything was back to normal.

I did install WebMessenger prior to my batter issues and noticed that this app starts up automatically every time the bb boots. Didn't find any settings within webmessenger which allowed this to be turned off (didn't like the app enough to really dig). Uninstalled, then pulled the battery as described above. No probs, 2+ days battery life since.

Is your wi-fi turned on? I found that my battery was draining pretty quickly if I left the wi-fi on, especially if it was actually not connected. I now only turn wi-fi on when I want to browse, and I get excellent battery life.

My WiFi is turned off yes; I only use this ocasionally when I'm in the office or at home. Yet I do have to admit that some times for no appearant reason my WiFi turns on itself, but apart from that it's allmost never turned on.

I'll try the battery pull Wiscaudi did on his machine; maybe it will work for me; because it's out of its charger for about 3 hours now and again I lost 10% of my batterylife allthough the only thing I did this morning was type 3 sms messages...

I'll let you guys know if the battery pull did anything for me.

greets,

Miguel

wifi is always on, 3/4 of the day it is probably disconnected.
my average day has about 60emails
handful of facebook messages
1 to 2 hours of calls
and jivetalk about 400-600k thru jivetalk
i generally expect it to be around 20% between 5-7pm.
i go about 3 days before a battery pull.

I found your about the battery life yesterday through the search function of the forum.
I found it very informative eventhough it did not provide a solution for my "problem".

Apart from that I tried the battery pull and it seems to actually "work" a bit; normally when disconnecting from the charger or the sync cradle I instantly loose my percentage down to 95% and now it stays on 100%, I'm very curious to see what's going to happen.

The only thing I keep wondering is why a battery pull might be actually a solution to this problem.

Muck also told about the fact that he does a battery pull about every 3 days.

To which end is this actually "helping" the battery prolonging his life span?

Miguel

I've heard that some phones can report battery values a bit off, to correct that a battery pull is needed.

I'm testing that as we speak:
Before Pull: 55%
After Pull: 44%

Now remind me to never pull the battery again! haha ;p

Well an off value can work in both directions, as you just verified

I do have to admit that the battery pull actually worked quite fine for me.
Battery is still at 100% and offcourse it's always handy to have some more free memory after a battery pull.

I'm going to keep my eye on the battery level for the rest of the day now and hope the battery pull solved my problem.

Well I've continued monitoring my battery level.
After 2 days now I've only lost 15% of my battery level so I'm still on 85% after 2 days of rather normal usage.

I'm happy to see the battery pull worked fine but I still don't quite understand why a simple battery pull extended my battery life, but in the end I can't complain about it

Glad to see it was sorted out for you, could it be that your phone reported wrong battery level and a battery pull made it go back on track?

Those are questions not for us to ask.

Seriously though, there was probably something running or the system was working overtime for some reason. When in doubt pop that battery. I think it's good practice to just do it every once in awhile to keep things in line. Maybe once a week or so?

I agree with Wiscaudi, something was running the background that you had not closed properly. I pop my battery more like every 3-4 days, but yes, 1x week is good.

AND topping off the charge ANY time you get a chance, 10-15 mins anytime during the day. These batteries were not meeant to drain constantly to 10-20%.
