Default Warranty question for 8830 - 02-27-2008, 02:15 AM

I Got my 8830 back in the beginning of December. I bought it used on ebay. 15 days after getting it i accidentally dropped it in the toilet. I managed to save it albeit some problems ensued such as, when i push the trackball nothing happens. Or when the trackball does works, it was a mind of its own and sends blank txt messages to the last person who txted me. I've used it with no problems outside of these up until the other day. The charging port wiggles and it cant hold a charge now. So i called up Verizon after it died and they said, much to my surprise, that my used phone was still under warranty and they are sending me a new one as i speak. Now my question. This phone will obviously show some water damage to the warranty guys when they get it, although, theyre sending me a new one before I send back the old one with the return label. Will they welch on the warranty when they find out it has water damage even though they sent me the new one allready and the problem i sent it in for is unrealated to the water damage?

odds are you will be held liable for the full retail cost of the replacement, ala $600ish.

Agreed, I work for Bell Mobility here in Toronto and whenever we setup a "repair" (aka replacement) we send another device to the client, once the "old" device is received by our repair facility it is thoroughly inspected and if abuse is found or liquid damage is evident the client is charged the full cost for replacement.

Keep in mind the 8830 (much like other mobile phones) has a liquid damage sticker that changes color when exposed to water/liquid. If that changed consider your wallet "damaged" as well.

send the replacement back, or take it back to a story and say you noticed water damage on your device. then check to see if they will give you a discount on a replacement device rather than full price. if not, you can check the Buy Sell Trade section here for another one that will be a bit cheaper than $600. Try and contact Demon on here, he works for VZW and might be able to help

i mean i dont see how this is fair seeing as i just called them stating my problem with the charging port and theyre first response to the problem was ok we'll replace. No questions asked. at the time i wasnt even thinking about months before when i dropped it in the toilet. Had they asked if it had water damage, the question would have sparked my memory.

I do not understand how you do not think this to be fair. YOU dropped the device in the crapper. It is no one's fault except yours. Their offer to replace the phone is in good faith till they get it back and find water damage. Just refuse the replacement and send it back to them unopened. You need to replace your phone at your expense.

This is the right thing to do. It seems many are trying to forget what is right and wrong and figure some why of getting over on others. Down deep, you know right from wrong!

If you need a replacement below retail I have one here I can let go below my cost. It was returned to my store two days after it was purchased without the UPC label. I cannot resell it as new, but can let it go for $430, which is about $100 below cost. Aside from that your best bet will be another from ebay.

I just went by verizon today with the replacement. The rep told me that the water damage on the defective unit was minimal and he said he was going to make sure I'm not charged for the replacement. He said honesty always goes a long way. So now the replacement is free. WORD!

Good for you! I've always found Verizon people to be outstanding when it comes to customer support.
