Default Nope no love for this VZW BB - 04-02-2008, 06:30 PM

Yes I have Data Services enabled. I even switched from Global to 1XEV.
Now just to note that when I did a battery pull this time I did notice my signal quickly switched from 1x to 1xev then back to 1x. If you blinked you would have missed it.

For now I will obviously be going back to 4.2.2.176. Unable to do further testing since this is my bosses BB and he needs it tonight.

I wish I could help out more.

Verizon data support doesn't know. Onto RIM support in the morning. The verizon data support rep re-provisioned (called *228) the device and also tried to send a text message, no text msg recieved.

Default Success - 04-03-2008, 06:38 PM

Just updated my Verizon build .176 and it went perfectly. I will report back my findings if there is any benefit to this new OS.

As it turns out I had a defective BB. I stopped by my local Verizon store and they replaced it for free. So far this is the only one out of hundreds of BB's I have come across with this problem.

It looks like there are a fair amount of Verizon users in here. Does anyone know if VZ Navigator still works with this latest OS? Also, has anyone noticed any other improvements besides battery life and memory leak fix?

if you want a neat toy, the iphone is great. If you're an adult, try a blackberry.

just a question, what's the danger of upgrading a device with an OS version only available on another carrier?

Default 4.2.2.353 / 4.2.2.196 and GPS - 04-19-2008, 12:33 AM

Does this 4.2.2.353 / 4.2.2.196 enable the GPS on Verizon?

So far [with 176] it's disabled and only available with VZ Navigator + $10/mo. I want to use the GPS with other 3rd party SW - any advice?

Welcome to the forums.

There is NO way to enable the GPS without paying the $10/ month and have VZ enable VZ Navigator.

Question 4.2.2.353 / 4.2.2.196 and GPS - 04-20-2008, 09:35 AM

Various posts indicate the same physical device, with the same OS version has the GPS enabled with other carriers. If that's true it means this functionality is a property of the device, not of the carrier. Then why is there "NO way" to also enable it with Verizon?

Because it's disabled on the hardware level based on the vendor coding of the device. It's just not possible. It's been tried and tried.

I would like to warn users of this O/S. This is NOT a result of my issue above, because that particular BB was defective.

I have tried to load this os on 3 8830's. 2 have failed, 1 successful.

The 2 that failed went into the repeating boot sequence, never starting up just a black screen and the red led or "red light of comatose". I had to revert to the current Verizon O/S to get them working again.

FYI..

To make sure there are no problems, I fully charged the 8830 before the upgrade.
I had the original A4.2.2.123 software on my phone, being upgraded to A4.2.2.196 version. I used the desktop software 4.3 version. Because Bell Mobility is my carrier, I did not delete the vendor.xml file.

The upgrade went very smoothly. While 3 quarter of the upgrade complete, it seemed that everything stalled, but if you are patient and do not touch your phone, it goes through without problems. The hole process takes about 30-35min.

The biggest improvement is the battery life. I can leave the phone open the hole weekend, while I use it only for emails and it still has one quarter of the bar unused for Monday morning calls. Really impressed, before I used to charge the phone every day.

the prompt told me i would have to activate the device wirelessly to gain access to data and to send messages. What does that mean and will i really have to do it? none of you guys mentioned it at all...

If you are on a BES you will have to enterprise activate again. If you're just using BIS then you don't need to do that.

Next OS is going to 4.5. Many threads on 4.5 can be found on the rumor mill.

If only we knew when it was going to be released.

For the first time I feel the future might hold something different for me. It's possible I'm fooling myself but I'm willing to take the risk.

this OS has given me the memory leak issue and i never had it before. All my emails and phone call logs and texts are just disappearing. I guess it's time to go back to .176

I would just plug your BB back in and make sure all unnecessary apps are removed from your BB. You may have over looked some. Lost call logs and emails are not an OS specific event. Also, check out my Optimize post in my signature.
