I don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I installed the newest version of Google Maps and low-and-behold the GPS WORKS! It isn't perfect (it is only accurate to within 1700 meters at best, 5000 meters at worst), but it works.

That's not GPS.
This has been discussed to death already.

Starting with Google Maps 2.0, Google is approximating your position based on distance from your nearest connected cell tower.

i agree. it is already on here. its tower triangulation, NOT GPS.
