I need to find out how to use the VoIP on the 8820.

Please can someone advise me on how to.

If it's supported by your carrier it needs to say WiFi-UMA in the upper right corner

Will the AT&T 8820 do this? If so, how do you set-up? I thought I had read somewhere that you can, but it used your minutes vs. T-Mobile, where you paid a $10 / month fee and didn't use any minutes. Thanks!

AT&T doesn't support UMA so, unfortunatly, it won't work.

I am an 8320 user in the philipines. My provider is smart wireless.

How would I be able to tell if they suppport UMA? I dont see the service book for UMA.

Is there someplace i can download the service book?

As stated above your cell provider has to support UMA.

As far as I know T-Mobile is the only provider at this time that supports that feature.

If anyone has other knowledge on this please feel free to correct me!

anyway to get the service books to give a shot?

I rememr back in the day you could upload some service books to activate stuff.

For example when the AOL client was beta. You could upload the service book and it would run/work

No, no Service Book possibility. It is totally enabled on the carrier side. As said earlier, T-Mobile is the only domestic carrier that offers UMA.

UMA with T-Mobile will only be supported by a T-Mobile branded device. For example, unlocking an AT&T branded 8820 will not give you UMA service with T-Mobile even though the AT&T 8820 is capable of supporting this feature, sadly, it will not work.

As I am doing this--using an unlicked 8820 form AT&T on T-Mobile--I can see what you say is true, but why is it so? Does the network know you are not using a t-mobile branded device? Is it possible to change settings so that UMA works? My guess is no, or there would be something in the FAQ about it, but I thought I'd ask the experts.

I have UMA in the top right hand corner of my screen and I am on Orange with BT Broadband. I have turned off the Orange GPRS signal and only using WiFi. It still displays 'Orange' as the network on the screen. Does this mean that say, for example, I were in another part of the world, I could use the phone normally but not incur any overseas phone charges when connecting this way in a wi-fi hotspot?

It works that way with TMobile US. Not sure on your carrier, though. I was just in England making calls to the US via UMA for free.

I believe that UMA with T-Mobile this is hard coded in the device itself, right out of RIM's factories. Much like how Verizon has done such with the 8830's and 8130's GPS. Just a wild guess though, I could be wrong. AT&T's 8820 is definately capable of UMA, but will not give.
