Default Mic sensitivity - 03-30-2008, 09:21 PM

Hi,

After a month of using my new 8830 people are telling me that I sound like an ogre. Well, more people then usual.

What I mean to say is that people say that the sound is loud, muffled and horribly amplified. My girlfriend has been complaining about this as well as a few friends I talk to.

I called my Old Man to test and sure enough, he says the sound was flat out horrible to the point where he didn't know it was me.

So, I did a few tests. Turns out I have to keep the phone off my face. Only the speaker can touch my ear. If the keypad is touching, or even too close, the sound is horribly amplified.

This about right for the rest of you using your 8830 ?

I think that's true of any phone--including a landline. If you keep your cheek pressed up against the mic, you'll sound muffled.

Hey thanks for the reply.

So when you talk on your bb is the keypad touching your face ?

All other phones I have owned, I can without any problems.

With my 8830 they keypad has to be away from my face.

But if that's normal then so be it. I was just curious if others have to talk the same way.

Thanks again

J

I was just testing this

if I lay the 8800 to my ear it naturally has the mic away from my face and mouth. I have to press it very hard to get it close to my mouth and then the earpiece is pulled away from my ear. now this could be a result of my bone structure and such. I think to be most effective the mic needs to be away from the mouth

also the angle at which it is held may affect this as well

Hmm ok.. So maybe that's it... I've always used phones with the keypad touching my cheek.. resting against it. I guess with this phone I have to angle it away..

I'm not forcing the phone to my face or the mic to my mouth.. Merely resting the keypad on my cheek..

The Mic is super sensitive. It gets distorted very easily..

I could bring it back but I bet the others will do the same.

Thanks again for the replies.

I went down to the dealer, she tested it and said they could exchange it but that 'chances are that the new one could come back with something else'. And you know, she's right. I can live with this.

Thanks again to all.

In the end, I updated to Bell's latest firmware for the 8830 and bingo ! No more mic issues.
