Default Latest 8800 OS: 4.2.1.193/4.2.1.115 (Multilanguage) - 03-31-2008, 01:55 AM

This OS is for the 8800 model only and will work on any carrier's 8800 model

Quote:
Software For BlackBerry 8800 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.1.193 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.2.1.193
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.1.115
* Software Platform: 2.3.0.87
* File name: 8800M_PBr4.2.1_rel193_PL2.3.0.87_A4.2.1.115_TIM.ex e
Download Link: (updated link 04/01/08) https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...5E712BC8380F5A

Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

Thanks. However your link is wrong (the link points to TIM Brazil, which has an older version).

This is the correct one:

**link removed, not working**

OK, any thoughts on the new version? Any noticeable changes? I've got it downloaded and ready to go, just checking in for any showstoppers.

I already found 1 bugfix: I'm on BES and deleting opened messages from the handheld didn't work with 4.2.1.179 -the message would still display in the list.
This version doesn't have that problem

you have a completely different device with a different OS. The OS released for one has nothing to do with the OS released for another.

You will if you load this multilanguage version.

There might be a way to move the Chinese language cod files from your current CJK OS version over to this one... and modify the alx file to install them. Let's see if anyone knows.

If not, i would the slight upgrade would not make difference, keep the Chinese you have now if it is required.

Thanks JSanders. I dont mind losing it but like you said, if there is an option to keep it, I rather keep it. I guess I can always wait since I am not sure if I will stay with the 8800 or move to the new 9000 series when it comes out.

I upgraded my 8800 from 4.2.1.101 to 4.2.1.115 (I skipped 4.2.1.108) last night. Everything went fairly smoothly (no hair raising or nail biting) with the following minor exceptions:

- lost all my profile settings (oddly enough I don't recall that happening with previous upgrades, but maybe I hadn't customized it as much before).

- all 3rd party apps migrated over but [as usual] I lost all registration keys and settings, and had to re-enter them. Not a surprise once you know and expect this. Custom themes did not break.

- had to reset TCP APN (as usual since I have a Cingular phone, it loses the Rogers TCP APN info). No surprises.

- temporarily lost SMS detection in BOTH Blackberry Alerts and Pocket Day Pro. This one had me a bit worried, but after a few soft boots and battery pulls, both started working again.

- changing settings in WGarage Reverselookup and AutoLock (both of which reside in Options, rather than being icons on the BB desktop) caused Options (and the phone) to lock up. This happened on my last upgrades too; powering off using the power off button recovers from that but it takes a few battery pulls to fix it permanently. Not so bad if you expect it or are used to it from previous OS upgrades.

Finally, after being satisfied that the phone was working overall, I then went and deleted the demo video, extra languages, PTT, extra themes, etc. and have about 32 MB file free after a bootup. Do I notice a huge difference? Not really (yet).

As a side note, I always had a problem where my calendar invites would get sent out using my wrong address (I have about five addresses set up on BIS). Last time I upgraded, I also had this issue where it used the wrong address and I couldn't set a default. I could set my mail default fine but not calendar. This upgrade was no different, but it used yet a different default address than it did last time (neither of which were the address I wanted to use). I finally got bold enough to delete my CICAL service books (I left the CMIME ones intact) EXCEPT for the default address I want to use, and it worked! Not sure what will happen if I re-send the service books but now that I know for sure what to do, it won't be a problem in the future.

Final summary: I didn't really have issues before so I suppose it wasn't a necessary upgrade. However, there are no negatives either (like slowdowns or memory leaks [yet]). And it was good practice for 4.5.

I've had v4.2.1.72 for like 2 years now and I can't even recall ever updating this 8800 device on AT&T networks. I've been waiting forever for an upgrade but seeing what others have gone through for this minor update that I doubt will do much, I will wait for v4.5 too. I've been hearing about this release for a long time. Does anyone have any idea when RIMM will release this and why it is taking so long for them to give us updates for a fairly current device?

The only problem I'm having is the media player. Every so ofther when listening to Media Player my media card disappear. I have to reset the BlackBerry to have the card recognize again.

Come on RIM release a version that is higher the 4.2.1 for the 8800, us 8800 users are being left in the dark. You'd almost think that the 8800 was released 5yrs ago at the rate of these updates.

There likely won't be an OS upgrade until the 4.5 OS release.

I cannot agree with this more. The fact that RIM left out some basic basic features and failed to come up with proper updates will lead me to choose another vendor on my next phone.

Default New OS with CJK - 05-06-2008, 07:35 AM

Hi All,

Does any one tell from where can I get the latest OS for 8800 with Japanese language support. I understand that OS with CJK in the filename supports Japanese. Where can I get that OS. And will this work with any carrier. I am using ETISALAT carrier & we need to give blackberry with Japanese support to our users.

Thanks & BR
Vijay

vijaycc, the easiest way it to make sure you get an OS version with "CJK" following the model number in the filename. Search this 8800 section of the forum.

Good luck, and welcome to the Forums.

Yes, it certainly will... just follow the instructions as posted above (esp. deleting the vendor.xml file) and you will be perfectly fine.
