Default Questions for all of you Jawbone users - 04-04-2008, 12:16 AM

I have had a Motorola 605 for almost two years, and just switched to the Jawbone because I'm tired of people telling me that they can't hear me when I'm driving in the car. I got the Earpiece and charged it up.

The first moment I used it, I was dissatisfied with the sound quality on my end of the call... My wife said that the difference between my old 605 and the Jawbone was Night and day. She could actually hear me. Even driving with the windows down and radio on. I can hear her just fine, but the sound is very tinny (lots of trebble, but no mids or Base). Sounds like the difference between a clock radio and a home stereo.

is there an adjustment that I can make to improve the sound on my end?

I have not got the Jabra Gels yet, I'll try to pick up some tomorrow. Hopefully that can help.

Also I really need a car charger, I was dissapointed when I found that Aliph didn't offer one. Anyone have one of those 12V->USB plugs that they can recommend? I'll have to pick up another USB charging cable.

Thanks
Steve

As far as i know you can adjust the jawbone itself as far as sound quality is concerned, i think the only thing on it you can "tweek/tune" are the sound shield and the volume output. The only way i see the sound quality to be able to be adjusted would be through the phone itself but as far as i know i have yet to hear of a phone where this is possible. It could possible be the jawbone itself because mine isn't tiny or treble(ey) sounding, but i am sure someone will give more input

I have had the Jawbone for 1yr. I think what you are experiencing is the fact that you are used to your old 605 and are not expecting the change in sound.
I went through the same, coming from the Plantronics world. I just had to get used to it simply because it works so well in loud evironments. I have also read that once you use the Jabra ear jells it does get louder, but at the same time possibly reducing voice quality because the ear jells tend to pull the Jawbone way from your face. You need the Jawbone to sit on your cheek for the Jawbone to work properly.

You should also buy an additional power supply from Aliph.

Is there a sound difference from the Jawbone earpiece, and the Blackberry's phone earpiece? Mine there is a profound difference in sound quality. If this is just a defective unit, then I'll have to exchange it, but if that's just the way it is, then I'll just suck it up and deal with it. (I'm hoping that it's just a defective unit)

So far i haven't had any issues with the loudness of the unit, just the subpar sound quality compared to both my old 605, and the earpiece on the phone itself. On my earpiece, there is a profound difference between the Jawbone and the BB 8830's speaker on the phone itself.

I absolutely could not get used to the tinny, treble sound from the Jawbone earpiece. I could only deal with it for a week then had to return it. I would rather use a wired plantronics headset when I'm in my car than to listen to the horrible sound from the Jawbone in my ear.

I just don't have that terrible tinny treble sound on my Jawbone. Great sound on my end. Norcalvp, I would recommend an exchange for you, try a different store if you can, from which you got the first.

I've used 3 jawbone units and was not happy. The BluAnt Z9 is much better, in my opinion. I have a problem with the jawbone's white plastic knob not staying on my face, which it needs to in order to work properly. People have told me it sounds like I'm standing under an airplane. I guess I have a weird shaped head or something lol.

Anyway, try the BluAnt Z9.

I have no problem with the jawbone sound qaultiy, mainly because my previous earpiece was a styrofoam cup and a string, but I have had a problem with the fit. I can never seem to get the earpiece to fit comfortably.

Just hold on to your shorts because with the advent of new earpiece laws coming into effect soon, we will all be getting custom ear gels made for a soon to be huge assortment of new earpieces on the market. Further down the road, implants. Yet further, virtual insanity.

The biggest issue I found with my Jawbone was the fit. The sound is a bit tinny compared to other models, but folks on the other end (the ones I have asked) have all said my voice quality was great. As to the fit, you have to play with ALL of the ear 'loops' and inserts to find the right fit. I found the one loop that worked best for me and did a bit of customizing with it and now it fits quite snug to my jaw, no problem at all. Exchanging for a new one because of the tinny sound will not help. Thats the way they are made unfortunately.

I have not used my often enough but those gents (sorry, if I excluded anyone wrongly) who have beards: do you find that folks have trouble hearing you effectively. The "contact" point is held away from the face/jawbone by my beard.

I did try exchanging it yesterday, and also picked up some MiniGels... The sound seems a little better now (not sure if it's the unit, or the Gel) but still not great. I've sent an E-mail off to Jawbone's tech support. and will post up the reply that I get. With the MiniGels, It Deffinately fits much better with the Standard earloop. It also doesn't bother my ear anymore.

Overall I think I'm going to keep it, because I love driving with the windows down. and I drive a lot. but I hope in the Future that Jawbone does some kind of Fix to these to improve the sound quality.

Thanks for the tips!

I have found it to be a little tinny on my side, however everyone I talk to cannot tell where I am on the other end. I love that, and I also love the ability to drive with the windows down and carry on a conversation.

Wirelessly posted

Another option for car charger is iGo with the USB tip. You can find them on the web at iGo.com or any Radio Shack.

I changed to Jawbone from Plantronics 655. I love the battery life, sound on the other side is great and I've gotten used to the sound in my ear. Maybe next version will offer better sound quality in the ear piece.

The other issue I found with the Jawbone besides the tinny sound, is the fit. The ear loop spring seemed to be pushing the ear piece away from my ear instead of pushing into the ear. You would think that when not on the ear, the ear loop would be springing tight against the headset which would keep it tight to your ear, but it doesn't. It springs away from the headset. Makes no sense. Tried all the loops, ear buds, every combination and just could not get this thing to sit in my ear. It seemed the tinny sound wasn't quite as bad when I would hold it tight in my ear, but I couldn't get it to stay tight.

I love my jawbone but have found not loud enough for some "quiet" talkers. also, it does not always stay in my ear but close enough that if someone is quiet i can just push it in. I love not having to repeat myself and no one complains of echo. However, having a conversation with the windows down and the radio up is just not possible b/c i would not be able to hear the other party well enough. perhaps I will try to find some jabra gels.

I had a hard time using my jawbone too until I ordered a custom molded ear piece from Custom Molded Earpieces from AverySound.com . Makes all the difference in the world, very easy on and off, much easier to hear, and it keeps the Jawbone in contact with your face.

I already know I'm cheap, BUT, $61.00 for an earpiece!! Yikes. I bought the Jawbone online with shipping for $89.00! I hate websites that take advantage of folks. They are offering the Jawbone ON SALE for $114.00!! Hmmmm...smells like fish.

I have been planning to pick one up, but I think I will wait a bit longer and see if this new one has better sound....should be out before too long.
