8830 Water Damage Indicators - WITH PICS -
04-11-2008, 06:45 PM
Hey everyone,
My 8830 won't turn on and won't seem to take a charge (aka no lights light up when I plug it in to charge, and it doesn't turn on).
I was worried about Telus claiming possible water damage, as I have heard that the indicator changes to pink even if you bring it in the bathroom with a shower on.
I pulled my battery, but I am not sure what the water damage indicator is. The battery has a white sticker with a red line through it that looks a lot like a water damage sticker, but I know there has to be one on the body too, or people would just swap the battery and get a new one.
My questions are:
1) is the white label with the red line on the battery a water damage indicator?
2) is the white little square in the top corner of the blackberry, under the battery (circled in red in the picture) also the water damage indicator? If so, are there any more? If not, where is it?
Thanks guys (and gals), I really appreciate the help! :buddies:

I think it is the second pic, because I got my blackberry brand new and the battery had the little white and pink line on it.

Yeah, I agree, my battery also has the red line through the white, so I doubt that is a water damage indicator as I know mine has never been exposed to water. However, the little black square in the 2nd picture might indicate something as looking at mine that square is white not black in color.

Thanks for the reply - I wasn't using the flash in that second picture, so that the metal backing didnt reflect teh flash, so that you guys could see the square. It's white on mine

I have a Curve and on my battery I have a similar looking mark as yours, instead of a red line I have red Xs. I also have a square inside as well and mine is a bright white. I think the second pick is your indicator. How long have you had the phone?

I'm pretty sure the battery IS an indicator. its either a white square with red x's or a red line.
It would turn pink if there was water damage. So both of your pics are of indicators.

So you're saying the red line is an indicator, but the fact that it is displaying a red line does not mean its been activated (aka wet)? What does it look like activated? all pink?

ignore the battery, they will zero in on the device's sticker.
But your battery does look like the sticker has been wet-activated.

Thanks for the info
I did some searching for pictures of the CX-2 battery, to see if they too had this red stripe. It's been tough to get a picture of the connecting end, but every one I have seen on google images seems to have the same stripe?
ie:
What do you guys think? Should I buy a new battery before making a warranty claim, to avert any potential problems?

Can anyone with an 8830 and/or a device that has a CX-2 battery check their battery and let me know if you have this red stripe?
I'd really appreciate it.

But you are still holding on to a device that is liquid-damaged. You can't fake that, and I would not recommend doing so.

I think my original post was mis-leading... My phone is not water damaged. I am/was paranoid however, that my inexplicably bricked 8830 would be denied warranty replacement (it's 20 days old) due to the moisture/water indicators having been activated. I have, as I mentioned in the OP, read about people's indicator strips going off from humid cars, showers, etc... So I wanted to make sure I wasn't SOL, so to speak, when I go take my phone in
So, with my original post cleared up, does it look like either strip has been activated? The one on the phone is pure white, and as we've beat to death, the battery's strip has a red line through it - Personally, I think it might be pregnant...Isn't that what the red stripe on the test means?

BOTH indicators are liquid damage indicators. that red line will bleed to the white around it to show liquid damage. the white field will then turn pink. if both are clear white (and the battery one a clear red line) then you *probably* dont have liquid damage. however there are other ways to tell inside the phone itself, on the circuit board.

Sorry amrak, I thought the square in the phone itself was activated, just bad color photography. If it is white, you have no problems.

Sounds like you just ahve a dead battery. I would return it since its only 20 days old. It looks like its not water damaged.

Pinck Square -
10-10-2008, 11:51 AM
OKay just checked (and found this thread) to find out why one of my batteries suddenly has a pink sticker on the end of it. Short phone call to wife solicits admission that battery may have gone through the washing machine. Logical really. Non water damage = red line, but put water on it and the ink spreads out (pink obv) to cover the whole square. No doubt a similar incontrovertible signal happens when the phone itself is doused sufficiently. Means a dealer can state without much fear of being wrong that a phone is kaput cos its water damaged.
Now wheres that other battery...

8830 no damage indicator? -
12-08-2008, 08:58 AM
I have an 8830 that was a replacement from Verizon when the trackball went bad. I am now having a problem with a couple keys not working. Thought I should check the water damage indicators and there isn't one on the phone. Where the square is shown on the picture above, there is not one. The battery has the red line which is a little fuzzy. Advice please. Thanks.

Both my 8830 and 8330 have the white and red strive on the battery. Also the 8330 is new, fixing to order a second battery. So I will update then also, if wanted.

Some clarification on liquid damage indicators:
Unactivated, (on either the phone or the battery) they will appear as solid white, white with a red stripe, or white with red XXX's. (The stiping and XX's help the folks who detemine if it has been triggered-the contrast allows for a clearer evaluation).
In most cases, the sticker would need some pretty consistant, direct exposure to liquid in order to activate (turn solid red or pink). So- you can't trip it by licking it (plus they taste awful), or leaving it in the bathroom while you shower (unless your showers last for days).
Most handsets also have at least two more of these mounted under the case, near possible areas where liquid could intrude, and near the mother board (where liquid can casue some impactful damage).
Be aware-if you have somehow tripped the external indicator, but aren't experiencing any issues now, you may encounter some later. Liquid inside the handset has a way of travelling from a harmless spot to a harmful one over time.
1st Step in Troubleshooting: Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan?
2nd Step in Troubleshooting: Pull the Battery.

The strip on the battery is just a sticker and are always red. The second picture with the square tab under the battery is what you are looking for. My BB 8830 went into the drink (replaced under warranty because of the number of phones I have with my provider... they take care of me) and that tab turned redish. The other tab noted was and still is the same.

Turn off your Bluetooth, if it is on, for one thing.
A blue LED normally indicates your Bluetooth is enabled.

Blue light -

The bluetooth is disabled. I checked it on 2 different water damaged 8830s. Blue light is still on. I am reloading the software currently to see if this may fix the problem.
