A new rule has been passed at the high school I go to that does not allow cell phones with cameras. I use my curve frequently for school purposes, and now im in a situation. I'm just wondering if the 8800 series is the best choice to switch to, as I have heard its keyboard has had issues. Thoughts?

I tried both when I bought the curve, and I just didn't like the keyboard on the 8800. Your best bet is to go try it out yourself and see how you like it. I imagine it's something you would become comfortable with over time, and with use.

issues? what kind of issues? i think most complaints were just for preferences. I love how my keyboard is, i actually like it a lot better than the curve's. Maybe its because i havent used a curve in quite some time and has gotten use to the 88xx keyboard.

Is that the only thing you are worried about in high school? Buy a cover for your curve that has the camera lens covered up.. when asked tell them that you have no phone camera. As long as you get really good grades, you can tell any school administer to f-off about any rules. This is something that you learn about high school when you graduate. Kids with perfect grades can argue anything that want.. its the way it works!

ahhh. i mis-read your post. I thought you were faculty, not a student. No offense to you brad, but i don't see any reason for you to have a phone out of your bag (other than to check messages from parents etc...) so if kept in your bag, you should be okay.

I have to agree with you 100% on the issue of whether a student should be using a phone in class, but keeping it out of sight isn't an option when it's against policy. The issue is the camera, student privacy, and the school's liability in protecting the latter. I would imagine being caught with a camera on school property would result in a suspension, so it's just not worth the risk.

There is always the option of deleting the camera software (I know that's possible because I did it accidently when I first got the phone :>), and using a case that covers the lens. That would be a lot cheaper than buying a new phone.

Why try to mess around with breaking the school policies. Whether or not you agree with it doesn't matter. If it's that big of a deal, organize a group to discuss at the next school board meeting. Get an 8800 series. Nothing wrong with the keyboard.

I'm not a fan of the 8800 keyboard, but you get used to it. It's not as bad as I thought it would be, I don't' like the lack of separation between keys.

The only reason I have it in school in for homework purposes and emails from my prof's. We get most of our assignments via email, and if I dont have my computer than its just easier that way. The reason for the ban was an incident where a student was taking pictures of teachers and prof's and posting things online... I understand where they are coming from... The only problem with disabling the camera would be that its still visible and all phones with cameras are confiscated. Anyways thanks for the thoughts.

i find the slightly bigger keys on the 88xx much easier to type on than the 83xx.
i dont press the next door keys as much on my 8820.
i also prefer the feedback on the 88xx keys.

Believe me, I have and use my BB in a lot of places I shouldn't, so I was only agreeing with the ban in principle! If the camera software was removed and you could find a solid backing or case, your Curve is no longer a camera phone. Try approaching the school administration and see if that would be an acceptable compromise. Sadly, in my experience with that type of bureaucracy, it probably won't be.

My curve is pretty scuffed up though so I was planning on getting something anyways...I was thinking maybe the 8700 if the keys on the 8800 are hard to use.

The keys on the 88xx aren't hard to use and just like anything else you would get used to it. I say just go with the 88xx.

Personally, I like the keyboard on the 8800 just fine. It's a little small, sure, but most new phone keyboards take a bit of a learning curve as it is. I'm completely used to it now.

Ok I decided to go with the 88xx series after using a friends 8830... what model should I get? Is there a big difference between the 8800 8810...ect

there is no 8810. it would be the 8800 or 8820. 8820 adds WiFi to the 8800. only main difference

I dont really need wi-fi.... and the 8800 is cheaper. I suppose I can always use my curve on weekends and just switch the sim out. Thanks for the help!
