Default HELP went cycling today with my BB in my pocket - 04-27-2008, 11:46 PM

I went cycling today and left my BB in my back jersey pocket, I didn't think that my sweat would be very bad on it. (my previous cell phone always did fine) But now my keys are unresponsive. Before I did that though, one or two of the keys always needed a little more press to activate them, and after I rode, it seemed like my trackball needed more press to use it. I thought, eh let me just restart it. Well, after restarting it, it took forever to find my network and then none of the buttons would work, same with the convenience button on the side. The only one that works is the power on/off button on top. I was thinking maybe just taking out the sim card, battery, and opening the microSD slot and wrapping the whole thing in a dry paper towel might air/dry it out? The water damage indicator is still white, any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums...

it seems that although your water damage indicator doesn't show "wet", you do have signs of moisture in the device.

a nice remedy for this would be to remove the battery cover, the battery, the sim card, and the microSD card (if you have one installed) and burry your device in a cup of uncooked rice. This method is used because the uncooked rice will absorbe the moisture out of your blackberry. it is suggested that you leave it in there for over 48 hours.

When you turn on your phone, does it return the favor? Welcome to BlackBerry!

Hope yours recovers. Today, while biking I was caught by an unexpected shower (like it should be unexpected in Seattle!!!!). Mine was in a pouch at my side in an otterbox but I was getting a bit worried. It survived but I think ziplock baggies are going to be an addition to my kit.

Good luck

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

I did a half marathon with mine with no problem. I guess I got lucky.

You're with AT&T and have an 8820, so, assuming you purchased it from AT&T, it is less than a year old. Call them and have them send you a replacement. It may be a refurbished model you receive, but my experience is that they are as good as new.

Your sweat could leave a residue on the components that will give you trouble in the future. If the water indicator is still white, you shouldn't have any issues.

I wouldn't try the ziplocs. If the air in the baggie is humid, it may condense and drip. Maybe get a little cycle bag for under the seat and keep the bb in it's holster in the bag.

Hey guys, after leaving it in a container of instant rice (yea i know, but that's all i have) i pulled it out the other day and it was working again. So after much excitement I went to sleep with it charging on my table. After a while I remembered I didn't set an alarm, so I went to check it again and... the keys are not responsive again. What's even stranger, the back of it felt a little moist even though it had been laying on a dry surface. So I left it setting out all night with the battery and cover off; tried again this morning, it worked, and then when I put my SIM card and battery in it, same problem.

Advice?

May the salt from your sweat has corroded something? When I ride I don't keep anything in my jersey pockets. I usually keep everything in a fanny pack. Helps keep the sweat off of things and doesn't bounce around. I took a pretty hard fall a few years ago and everything in my jersey pockets were ruined (and my back pretty bruised). Fanny pack carry keeps me a bit more cushioned. I also bought a cheap phone ($30) and switch out SIMS before I head out. I don't need to be checking emails when on a ride

I cycle 40 miles plus daily

BB goes into ziplock bag leaving it partially unsealed and then into the saddle bag

you can also wrap the BB in a papertowel and seal zip loc completely the towel will keep moisture that may build up in zippy away from BB

The indicators may not be activated but when they open the device (which they will) if the is any sign of moisture ie corrosion he will be billed for the equipment as warranty does not cover liquid/moisture damage

I have a couple cheap phones I use as well.

But the 8800 has GPS that I use to track my routes when cycling and gives me speed and elevation so that i can analyze and build my workouts around the data.

not sure why though as I no longer race just something I enjoy doing

I cycle all of the time with my Blackberry. Thus far I've not had a problem with perspiration getting into my device. However, I keep it in its pouch in my jersey back pocket. Lately, I've been keeping it a pannier bag (wrapped in jacket to absorb vibration and shock).
