Default 8830 takes dive into toilet, Survives! :) - 04-28-2008, 04:48 AM

Hi,

I'm back on Blackberry now. No longer an 8703, but now a 8830. I had switched to a HTC Touch Windows Mobile device after my 8703 keep rebooting for no reason. I couldn't stand the Touch for many reasons - battery life, no keyboard, no GPS or even faked out GPS, too slow (Blackberry has a better flow for getting/replying to messages). I dumped the HTC Touch and got a BB 8830.

Anyway, so my 8830 is 1 DAY OLD!...and I'm enthralled with it so I'm standing at the toilet (at home) with the 8830 in my left hand. Wouldn't you know, it slipped out of my hand! :( The water was still clean at this point but that wouldn't matter if it wasn't...I quickly snatched it out of the water. It didn't sink, it only landed on top of the water and tilted over a little. I immediately removed the battery (I know this is important for survival). I shook out what water I could. It didn't get immersed, only a little water got in the sides and battery case. There was no water in the display area...but there was condensation there. The water damage indicator on the battery is red but not the one on the device. I blew it out with a hair dryer for about 30 minutes. Then I took it outside since it was sunny and put it on the dash of my car. It was in the 70's so it wasn't too hot for direct sun exposure. I turned it over now and then and set it on it's top or bottom too, just to be sure that any moisture evaporating had a way to escape. I did that all day (from about 10am). Then I did the same thing the next day, placed it in the car.

As of yesterday evening, you can't tell any difference. It works perfectly and looks like new I do still worry about future problems. We'll see. I dried it thoroughly though so I think it'll be ok. If not, our company has the equipment protection plan so I can get another one at no cost. I just didn't want to go through that after ONE DAY of ownership and explain how it happened!...LOL

I love this 8830! I love the trackball and I love the appearance. It's a very nice looking device and it works well too!

Here's the 8830, post-toilet plunge

looks like the "today plus" theme. you can get it from mobile.blackberry.com from your blackberry browser. I use it and absolutely love it.

Yeah I think it's the theme mentioned in the previous post. One of the freebies from Blackberry. I like it

Get this:
JET BLACK/FROST WHITE PREMIUM SKIN CASE FOR 8800/8820/8830 - *CSKBB8800-BK

If you use a holster or case you may want this:
SUPER SLIM RUBBERIZED HARD CASE & HOLSTER COMBO -Blackberry 8800/8820/8830 - BD2-CSRSC2BB8800

The rubber skin is excellent. Stops it from slipping from your hand and sliding around the car. I keep my BB8800 in my front shirt pocket and it hasn't fallen out once since I have the skin.

Regards-Michael G.

Glad it worked out for you. Heck, I'm glad that water was clean! This said, does anybody remember that scene from Trainspotting? How far would you go for your Blackberry?

I have had a few close calls with liquids and my baby (Red 8830) but thankfully I had one of those silicone skins on my device and I am sure that is what saved it. It hasn't (as of yet *knocks on wood*) fallen into the toilet or had anything spill ontop of the phone.

"Is this about my muscular thick thighs?" 7250 > Treo 650> 8830
