I was wondering...for those who travel frequently with their 8830 World Edition -- can you use other data (browser, google maps, etc) on the Verizon Unlimited GlobalEmail Plan? They specifically say that the plan is for e-mail only...

I've traveled to Canada on the global plan several times and have used all those applications without getting charged extra.

How about across the ocean? I'm making my first international (GSM) trip -- a lot of my colleagues use BB Messenger and I communicate with most of my friends using Google Talk. Can they tell what the data usage actually is?

Yes, you can, absolutely no problem.
It's unlimited data (BIS, BES, BB Maps, web browsing, PIN messaging & BB Messenger, etc etc.) upto 5GB per month.

OK. Just wanted to be sure, because I was told on the phone by VZ that the Global Email plan can only be used for E-mail. (i.e. implying that all other usage is blocked OR that I would be charged for non-email data). Anyone else have any experience with this?

I spent two weeks in Germany with Verizon's Global Email plan. I was really amazed with the whole experience! Everything works, and the battery life with GSM is shockingly awesome.

The only thing that sucked was their voice rates, BLAH!

When I was in the Czech Republic some weeks ago the agreement was only to use email and not voice with the company and family. I will find out the damage on my next bill. I agree that the battery life on the 8830 with GSM was about 70 percent longer than CDMA.

I just got back from 3 weeks in Europe. For some reason my Google Maps would not work, but otherwise it was a great experience. Verizon unlocked my phone before I left without any problems. That allowed me to buy a Vodaphone SIM card and use it for phone calls. Mobile to mobile was €0.47/minute, mobile to land lines was €0.27/minute.

It was kind of a hassle to swap the SIM cards back and forth, but it was well worth it. Even though I was on vacation, it was nice to be able to stay up on work emails and keep my mailbox cleaned up. I also did a daily journal, most of it from my 8830.

Google Maps did not work for me either. It showed that I was in Spring Texas when I was in both Amsterdam and Prague. Weird.

Contradiction. Unlimited (up to 5GB?)? So which is it?

The GSM connection that Verizon uses is designed for email NOt web browsing, but it works fine just don't expect it to work as quickly as it does in the States.

That's weird that google maps didn't work. I've been to a few places and actually ended up depending on my 8830 and google maps to get me around!!

Granted it was a little slow.. as mentioned... but it did work. I also had a gps puck that I took every where which made it all the better...
