Default so my trackball broke today - 07-05-2008, 04:32 AM

along with the trackball so did the back button.

i reinstalled the os, in a hope that it wasnt hardware failure. it was no bananas.

the problem now, find a way to turn on the wireless so i can get onto the network.

is there anyway to do this without the trackball?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 9000 4.6.0.67)

How did you break the trackball/button. It is possible that you can just replace thw trackball and it will solve your issue. Also you can contact your carrier, and see if its covered as a replacement.

With the wireless off you cannot really do much of anything. If you cannot get to the manage connections/wireless on/off app I am fairly certain you are dead in the water. Try to back your device up or move the info to a spare/new device.

Wow! I am having the same deal as muck, starting yesterday. Had mine in my pocket while working and then next I know, the trackball can't click anything, and the back button stops working. I can use enter/return to do most everything I would click, but the lack of the back button is a pain.

Read someone else with a pearl had luck squeezing the trackball really hard, but no luck there (I may be just afraid to squeeze hard enough - worried about breaking it more).

Have had mine about 4 months, with no issues keeping it in pocket til now.

If it was just the trackball, I would encourage the push hard/move approach. I've had my track ball lock up a few times, and it was just residual goop that I was able to pop loose by pushing down hard and moving the ball in all directions. But I've never the ball stick and the back button not work as well.

That method works when the trackball won't scroll properly. In this case the contact on the circuit board is stuck in the "pushed" position. If you pop out the trackball you may be able to pop the contact back up. Either that or it's time for a replacement device.

don't know how it broke. went to pick it up and the trackball would scroll irrationaly, and the back button would go back and trigger the letter U at the same time.

so i popped out to have a look at the trackball and contacts and it never worked again since.
ive dissassembled the device to look for water, and theres nothing. so it just looks like hardware failure.
the contact under the trackball, also still clicks so i assume its not stuck either.

the trackball is still doing some funny things as the screen will light up randomly, it scrolls between the application and profile icons,in zen.
i have it showing the icons at the moment, just in case it randomly scrolls to wireless manager.

RIM have to implement some kind of up down left right arrangement on the keyboard for trackball failures i think.

i dont really have an avenue for exchange as i have a att 8820.

gives me a very good reason to get the bold now.

I wonder if taking apart your blackberry will expose problems?

Something like dirt or moisture could be causing problems.

It definitely sounds like some form of moisture damage to me.

I've got an issue were the trackball in an 8830 will not scroll up. It will scroll down, left, right, and click but will just not go up. I was hoping not to take it apart but aside from bringing it back to the carrier is there anything else I can try?

Call your service provider, they will send you a replacement unit under warranty even if you don't have insurance. They did for me.

Default Mine broke today too - can't scroll down - 07-08-2008, 09:30 AM

I was using it normally, and all of the sudden the ball wouldn't move down. It's "stuck", and it will not roll that way. All other directions and clicking are fine. Can't seem to get it to move down, even after pressing hard and various other things.

You can buy replacement keyboards and trackballs from cnn.cn. I recently ordered the entire black housing kit and black keyboard for my Verizon 8830 (Silver). It wasn't too difficult to take the BB8830 apart. The black kit came with the necessary tools.

mine did the same thing. took out the trackball, there was a little spec of dust that kept it from rolling down. cleaned it up and back to normal. i've had to clean it a few times in the last year i've had the device.

You could just press the ball and move it in direction that is stuck. That usually clears out the problem.

My bb once got stuck and couldn't go left, and later up too. I got it unstuck the same way both times.

I had the *exact* same issue a few months ago. The push-really-hard approach worked for me, but then it came back a few times, but for about 2 months now it has not happened. Also try other known solutions like leaving the battery out overnight, etc.
