Default OS: 8800 4.5.0.62/4.5.0.44 (Multi) - 07-14-2008, 11:50 AM

Software For BlackBerry Curve 8800 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.44
This OS will load on any carrier's 8800 model as long the user follows the instructions below exactly as written.

Filename: 8800M_rel62_PL2.7.0.61_A4.5.0.44.exe

Package Version: 4.5.0.62
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.5.0.44
Software Platform: 2.7.0.61
File name: 8800M_rel62_PL2.7.0.61_A4.5.0.44.exe
File size:80 MB

http://www.a1.net/downloadcenter/bla..._A4.5.0.44.exe

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8800:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed.
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...93E4F3BB068C22
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.
The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

Yes it can be used on any 8800 regardless of locked/unlocked status. It is supposed to fix the browser text entry issue as well.

Default What's the difference? Or bugs fixed? - 07-15-2008, 12:19 AM

Can we recommend that whenever there is a new version of OS released, there should be a bugs or enhancement lists? It would be easier for end users to determine if we should upgrade it or not. Thanks.

You'd think the developer might do something like that, huh?

Yeah, both Google and RIM are not too big on the changelog side of things. (Obviously Google doesn't matter much for this discussion, but they're just a good example of, well, not so helpful development and release practices.)

Great idea, though.

You usually have to lurk around a bit and check out other users' feedback and make the decision to upgrade based on that.

Or you can jump fearlessly into the flaming abyss of beta testerdom like the rest of us.

Oh, wait - this is an official version. You can jump fearlessly into the smoldering abyss of beta testerdom, thinly disguised with the cold comfort of officialness, like the rest of us.

Sure would be great if the download would stop getting interrupted.

Wirelessly posted (8800)

Much snappier than an earlier version I had, and more free memory, too. Just need to check whether the VM icon issue is resolved...

Found the answer to my own question. After searching on this forum, found that another BB user mentioned this for the BB83xx series 4.5 OS upgrades.

However, if you have two versions of an OS - one with Chinese and one without, and view the Java directories side by side, I think you will quickly see which files they are. There will be "blocks" of cod files that you will need. For example, for RIM's platform resource, below are the Chinese language support files:

net_rim_platform_resource__zh.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_CN.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_CN_CangJei.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_CN_WuBiHua.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_HK.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_HK_CangJei.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_HK_Jyutping.cod
net_rim_platform_resource__zh_TW_CangJei.cod

For other OS resources, there will be other cod files for Chinese language support which you will need. Just look for anything with the letters "zh." "Zh" stands for "zhongwen," which if you are looking for Chinese language, I assume you know what it means. CN = China. HK = Honk Kong. TW = Taiwan. Also, for the above, you can see some of the Chinese input systems offered for China, Hon Kong and Taiwan. There is also a pin yin input system for simplified Chinese characters. New in OS 4.5 is Taiwan's BoPoMoFo input system.

Also, from the main directory of the OS, you will need to copy the file CJK.alx to the main directory of the newer OS you are trying to load.

I have used this method successfully for many versions of OS 4.2 and now OS 4.5 when Chinese language support was not included in a newer OS.

Hope this helps.

I would be interested in hearing what people are seeing in improvements from the new version. The prior Vodafone one although a little sluggish has been working pretty well. My only issue is that the lack on mapping programs (GMM nor BBMaps will work - I'm on BES & ATT and none of the solutions posted have worked). Would be curious to here about the speed + mapping from anyone who has made the upgrade.
