Question 8820 AT&T OS United States - 07-16-2008, 03:07 PM

What version of the OS is newest for AT&T customers? I am using 4.2.2.169 (platform 2.4.0.67) and I'm pretty sure it is not the newest software out there. I read some posts on other threads, but am still confused on what AT&T customers can use. I am worried that if I use an update from say, T-Mobile, that it will brand my phone T-Mobile and mess up my AT&T settings because the phone is not unlocked.

Welcome to the BBforums.

This is the latest OS version for the 8820 officially released from any carrier.

You can use that OS, and it won't change the ATT settings or branding, not the flash startup screen on boot up and not even the painted logo on the face of the device.

Unlocking and using another carrier OS are not related.

thanks for the quick reply to my posting! I am new to the world of blackberry (i just got my 8820 about 5 days ago). I will probably be posting new questions in the future as well as replying to other peoples postings and browsing to learn information. I will reply later about how the OS update went!

coincidentally, just yesterday my firm's techs agreed to help me update my 8820/4/2/2/169 with the newer one stickied at the top of the 8800. unlike me, they are both pretty savvy with blackberry technical issues but they reported later my at&t branded 8820 would not allow the upgrade. (sigh.) i didn't even understand the explanation. guess i'll keep waiting on the alleged bold

Did you show them the instructions posted with the file in the Sticky?
Ask them to post here if they need help.

I have an ATT 8820 with my company using BES. I used the instructions exactly as written and upgraded with no problems. Did they delete the vendor.xml file?

i think so, but i'll have to defer to their response later. sorry you're talking with the relative dummy. thx for letting me know your situation

UPDATE. our tech said he did delete the vendor .xml file, still apparently failed, and declined to spend more it time on this before at&t approves a new os. short version, i'm probably going to need to give up until at&t approves ( and puts online under http://www.wireless.att.com/bbdownloads ) a new OS for the 8820. (maybe that won't be until at&t makes the bold available...) thx again for the offer of help and sorry i couldn't take you up.
