Default Russian keyboard layout at BB 8830? - 08-15-2008, 04:11 PM

Hi everyone!

I've used the search button many times but still have no answer. The goal is to install russian layout to my 8830. The only thing I found was a method to install all _ru .cods from 8820 4.5 firmware's java folder. It was done (36 self-made .alx, damn it) and now I have russian menu (which wasn't neccessary) but still no keyboard layout. Any thought on the topic?

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS. If I'm so stupid that I didn't find it myself just gimme a link :D

You will not be able to change the layout of the keyboards, ever.

It is built into the device, much like the splash screen. Even if you load a different OS you will never change it. This is why a QWERTY keyboard will never work like a QWERTZ one.

I was able to install Russian input during the installation process (8820 (tmo), 4.5.0.52). To access it, press ALT-Enter for a menu. A type of Suretype in Russian comes up. There are two Russian options: (a) Pусский (Pоссийская Фед.), a standard mapping of the QWERTY to Cyrillic, and (b) Pусский (United States), which maps keys on the QWERTY to their Cyrillic equivalents (i.e., "F"="ф").

It is covered on several threads for different BB devices) (sorry I can't post the complete links):

/142997-russian-hebrew-fonts-view-type.html
/102883-qwertz-keyboard-multilanguage.html
/92485-no-russian-input-language-8100-colleague-8300-has-i-m-dumb.html

On a related topic, how is Verizon's coverage/support of the 8830 in Russia (and what part of Russia)? We use tmo, and recommend it for our clients travelling to Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

Thanks, I'll look through theese topics. The problem is that the last firmware for 8830 is OS 4.2 and it has only English inside. The same situation with BETA 4.5 OS for this device. So, as I realised, the only way is to wait for the Sprint or Verizon to make a multilang firmware.

In fact I'm NOT using Verizon (and my device was factory made for Sprint) =) So can't say anything about it's coverage. In fact, there is only one small CDMA provider in Moscow and it's using CDMA-450, so I don't think that the roaming for verizon's (or Sprint's) clients is possible. Using a gsm sim-card is the only way.

PS. "Пусский" and "Поссийская Федерация" make me laugh =) Русский and Российская Федерация are correct variants.

ha! Finally I've got it! =))))

the method is based on clevebb's posts.

So, two things are neccesary.

1) Latest 8820 firmware
2) Latest 8830 official firmware

the first step is downloading and installing both firmwarwares

the second step is copying all the .cod files ending with russian or _ru from 8820's Java folder (program files/research in motion/apploader/8820blahblahblah/java/)

the third step is copying three .cod files (net_rim_tid_repositoryBasedEuropean, net_rim_tid_basicFastEuropean, net_rim_tid_fastEuropean) from 8830's Java folder (program files/research in motion/apploader/8830blahblahblah/java/)

the fourth is making correct .alx file (it's very easy, I've just written it in notepad, the content should be something like

Quote:
<loader version="1.0">
<application id="Russian Project">
<name>Russian Project</name>

</application>
</loader>
the fifth and the final is putting all the files in one folder and uploading it via BB DM.

And (TADAAAA) I've managed to add russian layout and russian interface. I'm quite sure that it should work with any language from 8820's firmware.

I actually managed to do all that for my 8330 Curve - downloaded a multi-language firmware for 8320 which came with all those _ru files....

don't see it working though... where and how do I switch the layout? Options -> Language does not show anything new.....

Ok, I have a working keyboard layout with word suggestion on 8330 Curve running 4.3.0, internationalization of the interface didn't work but it was never my intention anyway

My final configuration:

lang data:

net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_russian_35k_2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_russian_ltr.cod

Not sure you need all of them but since my multiple add/remove of the program I was missing these files, so:

net_rim_tid_basicFastEuropean.cod
net_rim_tid_fastEuropean.cod
net_rim_tid_repositoryBasedEuropean.cod

The .alx file:

<loader version="1.0">
<application id="Russian Keyboard">
<name>Russian Keyboard</name>
<description>Russian Keyboard</description>
<version>1.0</version>
<vendor>Russian Project</vendor>
<copyright>Russian Project</copyright>
<fileset Java="1.0">
<directory />
<files>
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_russian_35k_2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_russian_ltr.cod
net_rim_tid_basicFastEuropean.cod
net_rim_tid_repositoryBasedEuropean.cod
net_rim_tid_fastEuropean.cod
</files>
</fileset>
</application>
</loader>

Thanks to Abadd0N who provided the lang data files, I would suggest using the other 3 from your firmware just in case

I uploaded the complete folder to

www dot lipatov dot net/BB_Russian_Keyboard.zip
(I can't post links here yet)

I'm not sure what happens when you uninstall this though, does it delete the "shared" modules included here from the device?

Attached Files
File Type: zip Russian Font and Input Support.zip (233.9 KB, 201 views)

Hi,

thank you for the great post. I do have Sprint 8830 WE phone and tried to install both above versions – installation went fine and I got Russian option under Language – but not under Input Language (that what I really need) anybody was able to make it work under 8830WE with 4.5.135 OS

Also alt-Enter doesn’t do anything on my phone……

Also does anybody ahs a fix for displaying files with Russian name under BB Media Player?

Thank you

Yes, same here... kind of. I have everything smoothly install and I see it under Input Language. I even see that shortcut for switch languages set to Alt+Enter, but it doesn't do anything when I'm pressing it in Browser or in email body. So, how can I switch between Russian and English when I type?

Thanks guys!!!

Well, already got my answer: changed shortcut from Alt+Enter to Shift+Space and test it with Google search page. Works!!! Went back to Language Option and change shurtcut back to Alt+Enter and... hurray... now everything in right place! pk2007 - try those steps and you should be okay, so you can type as below:

Жить хорошо а хорошо жить еще лучше!!!

Check under Property-->Language and click on "Input Language". If you see Russian there, you should be good and you just need to know how to use it if it's not there, you need to rerun installation one more time. Hope that helps!

We've developed a little application that helps entering Cyrillic without having to reflash BlackBerries or hack the installation with files as described above.

It's called InterType and has certain limitations and drawbacks compared to a native OS keyboard extension, but then again it's very small and easy to both install and uninstall.

If interested, check it out at http://blackberry.beiks.com or http://mobile.beiks.com (mobile site) .

Hi! I've used this for my 8330. Worked perfectly. Recently I've switched to 9630. Is there any way to use it for 'tour', os 4.7?

Thank you.

I am not aware of any reason why it wouldn't work there.

If you are experiencing problems please let us know.
