Information needed please. I cannot get 4.5 to load on my ATT 8800. I wiped the BB with JL_Cmdr, removed the memory card and deleted vendor.xml. No luck. I tried an older version, and 4.5.0.81. 4.2 went back on without a problem. What else could be preventing the upgrade? I originally had DM 4.5 then upgraded to 4.7.
Thanks

Where's the BIS option? -
11-24-2008, 01:33 PM
I use a T-Mobile (USA) SIM card on an unlocked 8800.
Today, I installed the latest East Asian OS. For some reason, it does not seem to provide for BIS email. The only option I can find is for BES, and I'm not hooked up to any enterprise server.
As an unwanted consequence of not having any email set-up, I cannot access BB Maps. I'm instructed to contact the service provider or system administrator.
Have I missed something or is the 4.5 OS only compatible with BES?
Thanks,
Kenneth

Just go to Options >Advanced Options >Host Routing Table. Hit the menu key and select "Register Now."
Also, don't use the Setup Wizard for setting up BIS email. Use the 'Manage Internet Email' icon.

Thanks, John. The A-Pac version was giving me lots of grief, so I chose to revert to T-Mobile 4.2.
Despite the wonderful things said about OS4.5, I've still got some concerns. The BlackBerry sites in A-Pac, Europe and the US cite numerous improvements and mention that it's compatable with 8800's as well as other late model phones.
However, it seems that a significant amount of preparation is required before making the change. There are 95 citations with lots of KB's from BlackBerry. Search their technical solutions center with "4.5" as the keyword.
Can anyone attest personal experience with OS4.5 and BIS email? If so, what steps did you take before upgrading?
Thanks,
Kenneth

I had no problem upgrading with BIS only.
I later activated a BES account, again with no issues and no special preparation.
Since, my BES has gone wonky. After a system wipe and while waiting for the BES to get sorted, I'm running BIS accounts with no issue at all.
What sorts of issues are you running into? Are you activating BIS accounts with your carrier's website, or just on the device? Have you resent the service books from your carrier? I know the "register now" tip mentioned earlier will resend the books, but if I'm hitting snags I usually try to manually resend them, too.

Thanks, Wei.
My main problem was being unable to set-up BIS email accounts, which is fundamental for me as an independent consultant to the medical device industry.
In fact, after upgrading through the traditional downloaded software on my computer, I was not even offered an option to set-up BIS and the usual icon was not among those on screen or hidden offered after the upgrade.
In addition, I was not able to use the GPS and Yahoo! messenger. These functions are important, but not critical, services.
I use the 8800 strictly for business purposes, which includes only email, web brower and GPS. I have established email accounts through an ISP and Yahoo!. They are in good working order on my desktop and laptop computers, and I also use them on an AT&T 8110 under BlackBerry Internet Service.
I am going to switch back to the older 8800, primarily because of its free maps and GPS navigation services and larger display. The 4.5OS looked very good in reviews and most of the best themes seem to require it.
I am concerned, however, by the fact that T-Mobile and AT&T have yet to recognize the 4.5 operating system. Nevertheless, I am willing to experiment with it on the 8800 by downloading through the new upgrade being offered on the BlackBerry web site.
As mentioned, there are numerous guidances on their Technical Solutions page. I suppose it's best to read them all before starting.
Thanks,
Kenneth

keownk1,
You are incorrect. TMobile does recognize and support 4.5 (just not yet for the 8800.) BIS works fine with 4.5 on any BB. You simply needed to resend the service books for the "Manage Internet Email" icon to return. GPS still functions (you need to take the device outside for a while in order to give it time to refresh the satelite information) just fine in OS 4.5.

The web-based upgrade process you refer to will only upgrade to the latest OS released by your carrier. You won't find anything new there if you already have the latest OS on your device.
And yes, as stated, you need to push the service books to your device from your BIS for the personal email setup. Most upgrades done properly, restore the service books in the upgrade.

I tried downloading to my 8330 and 8830 and the application loader tells me that I am running the latest software. When I check the software version, the 8330 is using v4.3.0.124 and the 8830 is using v 4.2.2.123.
Any advice?

4.5 has just killed my 8800
The upgrade process started, got past the upgrading ROM bit and then I saw loads of files going on. Then it restarted my device....well, it tried to and that is where I am now, been sitting here for over an hour and nothing has happened. Apploader says 'connecting to device' and my BlackBerry is just sitting there flipping the hourglass....is it dead?

Yes - download the right package for each phone. BlackBerry OS versions are hardware specific, and are not interchangeable.
I'd also recommend reading the instructions for updating, as you'll have to delete the vendor.xml file in order to get the OS loaded.
Good luck.

Have you made any progress on this issue?
I suspect you'll have to start the installation over. Upgrading phones always makes me twitchy (even still). I always fear I'll lose everything in some unprecedented thermonuclear meltdown within my poor phone.
So far, every upgrade on my 8800 has succeeded, though lately the restore of my databases has been incomplete or problematic in one way or another.
Let us know how things went for you.

So I am in the middle of my upgrade, and now I am stuck at loading the rim_theme_bbdimension_zen theme. It hasn't moved in 20 Minutes. Did I just brick my phone? I don't want to unplug it right now.

Oy....doesn't sound good. You may have to unplug, wipe the device with JL_Cmder (in my sig) and then plug back in and restart the OS load. Your data has been backed up automatically (you can manually restore the backup) but 3rd party apps will be gone. You'll have to download them again.

Well, I unplug it, and pulled the battery. The BB started up, but without any themes or the core software installed. I ran the loader again, and it said that it was going the install the application software. I let it do it's thing, and now it's rebooting. Fingers crossed. If this doesn't work, I'll just wipe it with that JL_CMDER, and reload the thing. I have good backups, so I just wanted to be sure I didn't brick the thing.

I have a 8800 connected to the BES, can I upgrade to the new 4.5 OS by myself. There was a warning message about the activate via wireless after the upgrade. that stopped me.
Can I activate the blackberry myself after the upgrade? or I have to ask the blackberry admin guy to help?
thanks.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)
You CAN start EA yourself if DM is installed for BES use and you have an online connection to your email server. However, if not then you need to have the BES Admin set a password for EA. If you've never done it I'd wait for a weekday when you can readily get a password set by your IT.

With all due respect, I'd be very cautious about making changes to an enterprise phone assuming you are on a corporate network.
Corporate policy varies, but most large companies rarely look with favor on individuals diverging from their standards. You might prefer to ask the IT guys when they're planning to upgrade.

De-installed 4.5.0.18 -
12-02-2008, 03:43 PM
I had three problems using this OS on my 8800. Multiple listing of some contacts occurred, so I might have 6 "John Smiths" all with the same information. This was random as to which contacts, but once there, the only was to get rid of them was to purge the database and reload it. I am using CompanionLink through DM to sync my Goldmine contacts.
The BBSmart applet became flaky
And Yahoo Go, which I rarely use, also began to act weirdly.
I de-installed 4.5.0.18 and reloaded 4.2.1.108, and all seems fine now.

Supported media card sizes -
12-05-2008, 10:51 AM
Hi,
I just upgraded my 8800 to 4.5.0.81 using the instructions in this thread, thanks! Just to clarify, based on an article at blackberry.com, will my 8800 now support 16GB MicroSD cards? Has anyone tried this? I currently have a 4GB card installed which was the posted limit for my previous 4.2 level.
Chris
P.S. I would love to include a link to the article but apparently I can't until I have posted 10 times. Whatever. The reference number is KB05461.

HTML isnt working -

4.5 is great. Seems really fluid and gave me some extra memory. I am unable to see HTML email though. I thought this was one of the main upgrades from previous versions? What gives? Is there an options somewhere to turn it 'on'?

I downloaded the new OS and installed it "successfully?" but it keeps crashing and rebooting!? Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions? I'd prefer not to go back to 4.2.

You need to reformat your SD card.
If I recall (it's been a few months since I hit this snag) this has something to do with the way the *.dat files are stored between 4.2.x and 4.5.x. That might just be poor memory, though.
I remember having to copy all of my files (but not the hidden *.dat files) to my PC, formatting the card on the device, then copying all the files back over. A major pain, but that's what it took.
It'll go faster if you've got a card reader. I would suggest backing up, formatting with the PC, then formatting in the device, then copying all the files back to the card.
If that doesn't make sense, check a quick search. I think there were multiple threads on this issue.

I accidentally stumbled on a solution to the problem. It sees to be related to the media card. I removed my old media card which had been installed during the upgrade and it immediately settled down. I then installed an empty 2GB MicroSD card and it still remained stable. Later I'll try copying mp3's and other stuff from the "old" card to the one in the 8800 and see what happens.

Ni Hao Wu!
I ended up doing what you suggested strictly by dumb luck; at least the reformatting part. I copied to the reformatted card all my old music but some of the pictures I had stored on the "old" card gave my 8800/OS 4.5 indigestion. I'll try it again without the pix.

Tethering broken? -
12-11-2008, 06:07 PM
Since upgrading to OS 4.5 on my 8800, ATT Communications Manager no longer recognizes it and I can't use it as a tethered modem. In an effort to solve it I've downloaded and installed the latest BB USB & Modem Drivers, the latest BB Desktop Manager (4.7) and the latest version of ACM. No joy. Any ideas on this one?

BB Running slow after upgrade (sd card issue) -
12-16-2008, 12:57 PM
Hi,
I just would like to comment that after upgrading to this OS, my BB was running very slow, but did not crash/reboot.
Removing the SD Card (evtl. reformatting it) solved my problem and now it works perfectly and fast
You should have this in mind.
Regards, Vladimir

Does anyone know if it is possible to just add a language rather than replace? I have Hebrew on mine and want to add Asian languages without losing the Hebrew.
