Default Can't Get to Facebook - Ugh! - 06-28-2009, 08:54 AM

I've got a 8820 that is locked-down by an aggressive IT security policy. I am totally aware that this IT policy is necessary, as this BB is owned by the organization I work for, but it would be great to be able to access FB like I access other websites. Here's the scenario...

When I try to sign in at FB, it's suggested that I download the FB BB app - which I can't. Understood. If I try to just hit the site, I get the sign-in page and then an error is thrown that the request can't be resolved.

Anyone have a work around for this? If I can't hit that site, fine, it's a business BB after all. But if I can, it would be good to know how.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried the Facebook mobile site?
m.facebook.com

If its no go, seems like your employer may not want you acessing FB from their device.

Yes, I tried the m.facebook.com site as well. But, interestingly there are 3 fields offered to sign in at the mobile site - none of which on the 8820 are labeled. So, I assumed that the first field is for ID and the second two are for password a redundant entry for password check. I get the same error despite what I enter, so you may be right that the FB site is just blocked by my employer. Just wanted to check to see if I was doing something wrong.

Thanks!

The only two entry fields are email address and password.
I don't know what the third is that you're seeing.
The site is the dae regardless if the BlackBerry model.
Do you have your browser set to emulate BlackBerry or Identification set as BlackBerry?

Go into the options of your BlackBerry browser... Make sure you set it to Internet Browser, this way all traffic goes threw your carrier and not threw the BlackBerry Browser/Company BES Internet.

Good luck though... The IT policy was put in place for a reason.

Great info, thanks!

I thought for sure that the browser setting would do it, as it was set to Blackberry Browsers. Plus, there was a second setting, "MDS" that I set to "Internet Browser" as well.

But no dice. Same error "HTTP Error 400: Bad Request".

Plus, on my 8820, when I hit the FB mobile sign-in page, it def has 3 fields, none of them labeled. The first behaves like an ID field as you can see what you enter. The second and third fields are grouped together. The first in that group is def a PW field, yielding ***'s when you enter. The last field is like the ID field.

Maybe this is just squelched by the IT policy. No problem if it is, I just didn't want to be doing something stupid!

Hey - should I leave the browser set to "Internet"? Are there advantages?

Yea... Your company got you locked down pretty good..

Give up

Nah Browser settings shouldn't effect much but I would leave it on BlackBerry browser just in case you need to access any internal webpages.

One solution would be to see if your prez is on Facebook. Businesses are finding FB to be an increasingly useful tool. Who knows, they just *might* find that FB is not just another waste of corporate resources. There are many organizations, and even civil agencies that have a facebook profile.

On the other hand, slipping your IT guy some 'consideration' might also work too.
