Unhappy 8830WE - missing default ringtones - 06-29-2009, 02:36 PM

And cannot figure out for the life of me how to get more ringtones. I got the ringBACK tones, but can't get ringtones. This is beyond frustrating. Can anyone help?

BTW - this is a new unit, enabled it last Tuesday. Have been frustrated since, but only with this problem.

My Default Ringtones only go through "Tune_FurElise" and I get nothing else. I'd obviously want a song, but I cannot get one and it's driving me nuts!

If you have the preloaded tones from a previous 4.5 build you can copy them in and load them.. you just have to find the .cod file and rename it accordingly..

Forgot the name though someone should be able to chime in (I hope)

it's would probably be easier to just find/make your own.

Are you able to upgrade 4.5?

You can also get a link to the latest 8830 at the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

By upgrade, do you mean buy a new one? this one is new to me. Otherwise, can you tell me how to upgrade?

Tone_FurElise is the last tone on the 8830. Do you have more on the list, or is that the only option you have?

By upgrading, they mean the OS on the device, not the device itself. Here's how to do that:

I did the download. What was it supposed to have done, because not much seems different about my phone, though now I'm annoyed that my address book is in big squares instead of a nice neat list. I would love to have a "Blackberry Mensa" in my area (Boston North) who can help me. I am so frustrated, I'm ready to toss this thing in the ocean! I want my Env 2 back!

Now the phone says:
BlackBerry 8830
Smartphone (GPRS, CDMA)
v4.5.0.160 (Platform 3.4.0.41)

There's quite a few changes in that version, including HTML email, youtube support, Documents to Go.

Do you have a media card. If so, I would recommend creating your own ringtones and using them.

It's very simple to do. Here is how I do it.

Download a free program called Audacity.
Install it to you PC.
Open any song you want to use as a ringtone in Audacity.
Cut any 30 seconds of a song that you would like as a ringtone and export it as an .mp3.
Move that newly created .mp3 onto your media card.

Once you have completed making the ringtone, then set it as your ringtone.
Profiles > Advanced > Normal (or whichever you're using) > Menu Key > Edit > Phone
Once in there, select Ring Tone and select Browse. Locate the ringtone on your media card and save your changes.

You can create all kinds of ringtones/notifications this way.

Okay, I already downloaded (and paid for!!!) 4 different ringtones but my phone says I don't have enough memory. HUH?!?! Thing is BRAND NEW! And I hardly have a thing on it! So if I do this, will I have enough memory? Should I just buy a damn Micro CD Card (which just does NOT make sense to me with a damn brand new Blackberry!!!)

Thanks so much for being a resource!!!

I would always recommend a media card. I can see your frustrations, but the 8830 does not have much onboard memory. You can pick up microSD cards pretty cheap now. Check Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!, they usually have pretty good deals on them.

While just got this "new" 8830 it is a bit of a dated BB.. the 9630 will be released shortly, which is a major upgrade to the 8830.

Any microSD card will work.

Take a look here:
What type and size Media Card can I use in the 8100 / 8300 / 8800? - BlackBerryFAQ

If you see MicroSDHC, that just means High Capacity (4GB and higher). They'll work too!

Awesome! Now move your media (ringtones and pictures) to the media card and you should be set!

Unhappy Can't connect to BBERY App World now!!! - 07-02-2009, 01:07 PM

I lost my Facebook icon and went to put it back and I am getting an error message:

Error starting net_rim_bb_appworld:Symbol 'ForcedResetManager.scheduleDeviceResetNoTimeout' not found

Also, now I have the chirp during phone calls which is quite annoying and my keyboard doesn't stay lit up for more than a few seconds, even when typing, which is quite annoying at night when you want to send texts, etc.

For you chirp.. Copy over the CDMA file from a previous installation into the 4.5.0.160 CDMA folder and run the uploader, it will look like a downgrade but its not.

C:\Program Files\Common File\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\OS Version here.

Not a problem, just give me some time to compile links/steps.
(I'm also in the process of packing for vacation so I'll take some extra time )

1. Download Verizon's 8830 OS (It will 4.5.0.77)
Link: BlackBerry® Software Updates

2. Install the OS on your computer.

3. Go into your "My Computer" icon, and navigate to the following folder:
Quote:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8830-v4.5.0.138_P3.2.0.51\CDMA
(Folder name may vary slightly)

4. There is a file called
Quote:
rim8830c.sfi
Do a right click and copy that file. (The file name may vary, but it remain in the same format)

5. Navigate to this directory (this hold the 4.5.0.160 BB files)
Quote:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8830-v4.5.0.160_P3.4.0.41\CDMA
(Folder name may vary slightly)

6. Paste the folder we copied from step 4 in here and overwrite/replace the existing file.

7. Plug you BB into your computer, run the Desktop manager.

8. To be safe perform a manual backup. (probably unnecessary but it's good to be safe)

9. Run the application loader. it should see the difference and tell you it's doing a "downgrade" but it's not, continue anyway.

10. The process should take minutes. Since it's only updating 1 file.. If it takes longer (45 mins) then it really is downgrading the whole BB OS, although it shouldn't if you BB is VZW make sure you delete the vendor.xml from the following directory
Quote:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
to avoid that...

Any further questions post back.

Okay, the first link in step 1 (yes, I'm already stuck there!) brings me to a page that offers either a Desktop Software download or a VZAM download. Which one or neither?

and thank you for the step by step instructions! My kind of man! (and I'm a chick!)

I hope the link is going to the same place... Click Personal Email, select your BlackBerry from the drop down, and mine web page only shows one radio button that selected "BlackBerry Device Software v4.5 (updated 4/21/2009)"

Do you get a similar screen?

Desktop Manager is what sync's you BlackBerry with your computer. It should be on the CD that came with your computer.

Did you update your BB before? if so the Desktop manager is what you used to update it.
It was included on the CD that came with your BB.

You can go here and click on the link to Download BlackBerry Desktop Software. 4.5/4.6/4.7 are all essentially the same, so it's your choice.

Wirelessly posted

Once you install the desktop manager, launch it. And on the main screen you will see an option for "application loader" it should see the change in the BlackBerry Operating System files and try to "downgrade" your BlackBerry, automatically if not post back.

Of course I didn't see the next step (thinking they went in order) to delete that vendor file and of course it's taking forever. So what do I do now? Do I have to do the upgrade again, then re-run these steps? I hate to keep bothering you!

It finished.....

v 4.5.0.160 is running.

Sorry, was on vacation

Sorry about the missing steps, I would delete the Vendor.xml file copy the CDMA file from the .77 directory into the CDMA folder in the .160 and re-run the application. (It should really only take 5 mins if that)

I'm still catching up on posts from last week so feel free to post back/PM me.
