Default 8830 not charging - 07-06-2009, 04:37 AM

My 8830 world edition stopped charging this morning around 6:30. It's about a year old and has been used a lot; there are a couple of scratches, etc.

After some investigation, I am reasonably confident that the problem is not the charger, the AC adapter I'm using, or the wall socket. Unfortunately, I'm in East Africa for the next six months (that's why I have a world edition!), so there aren't many dealers nearby to whom I can take it to figure out what the problem is.

Basically, there are two intuitive possible problems: (1) the port could be corrupted; (2) there could be a battery issue. I'm hoping somebody on the forum will have an idea which one it is, or a good tip for how to tell which one it is without having a battery shipped here from two continents away.

If it seems like it's the port, I'll probably just buy a new blackberry; if it's the battery, I may be able to get a battery here.

Thanks in advance... any advice would be much appreciated.

Wirelessly posted (overwhelmingly stressed)

Look at the port how many pins do you see? Is the port loose at all?

I see five pins; the port doesn't seem loose.

Mine did that and I tried a battery pull and that didn't work. I took the battery out an hour or so and it started charging again. Hook it up to your computer via USB and see if it charges.

If it charges usb then its the charger itself if not contact provider?

This happened to my 8100. The port just stopped working. I ordered an extra battery and an external battery charger from ebay (very inexpensive) and that had to do. Very frustrating but it worked for the rest of the time I had the phone.

Have you tried cleaning the battery contacts on both the device and the battery itself?

1st Step in Troubleshooting: Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan?
2nd Step in Troubleshooting: Pull the Battery.

I have had my 8830 replaced by Verizon 4 times for the same issue. No amount of trouble shooting fixes it.
Here's the problem: if you drop it, its pretty well done. Initial symptoms are that it takes longer to "process" simple things like scrolling up or down. It inevitably gets worse over time until at last, you can't charge your battery. And heaven forbid you drop it twice!
Wish they'd put some shock absorption in this gadget.
