1. The reason that Wi-Fi and other new features are not included is simple, it takes time to put those things into development. The phones coming out today are using the features requested months or years ago. So if you want Wi-Fi or SDHC or A2DP Bluetooth or any other new feature, remember that stuff needs to be worked into a feature set.
2. As Blackberrys become more mainstream, more user friendly features will be built in, IE a camera, mp3 player, etc.
3. Carrier restricted phones, like how the RAZR was only on Cingular, or the Pearl was only on T-mobile, are licensing agreements between the manufacturer and the carrier so they can entice customers to be loyal or switch to their service. Those agreements are only temporary. The 8800, just like the Pearl will be out on both Cingular and T-Mobile as soon as those agreements expire. If you feel you need to stick with your carrier, go buy the phone, pay $40 and unlock it, then use whomever you wish.
4. If your on CDMA, that has more to do with the carrier wanting that model in their stores or not. With Blackberrys becoming more mainstream and highly desired items, its more likely that your carrier will add a model or two to keep current with competition.

The 8800 still looks hot!
But, I have to agree that no WiFi is a deal breaker for many.

What would be the real reasons for the upgrade? Just to get 4.2?
Nah..... having WiFi was the big draw....

Sexy phone, if that is what you are looking for....

But hey, I will prob still get one..... hahahahahah

it still gives you the media capabilites of the pearl, smaller form factor than 8700, gps, other benefits of 4.2 (like open .wav attachments), etc. so yes even without wifi I will get it over the pearl i'm currently using to have all those features and be back on a full QWERTY keyboard.

All I have read is the WiFi is for UMA and not data. But without having a current shipping BB device with wifi - in house to examine - no one will know for sure as things have a way of changing.

All I have read about 3G is - the guys getting the best data rates ( 1.6mbps+ ) are using HSDPA/UMTS data cards for notebook computers and not the ones tethering (900kbps).

So for heavy duty tethering, it may be best to either swap SIMs, or get a dedicate data card and SIM. I can live with calls rolling to VM. Others can't. YMMV.

The 8800 does appear to be a compelling upgrade over the 8700. YMMV.
