Default Anyone know anything about the GPS in the 8800? - 02-12-2007, 11:38 AM

I wonder what GPS chipset they are using and how reliable it is? I know the sirf III used in the BT pucks is about the best.

Was wondering that myself. I can tell you that the software vendors are preparing for the HURON release. We will see what happens.

I hope it is decent. I have a high end Garmin handheld color mapping GPS and it only take a few seconds to aquire a 3D fix. What a difference the new GPS chipset has!

Hopefully telenav is only preloaded due to its reacent launch on cingular. Id still like the option of using other programs for GPS navigation. Telenav is nice but I have had several problems when I relied on it too much with my 8703e. It just isnt that good at routing or picking up an acurate signal in an urban environment. That may be partialy the fault of the A-GPS on the 8703e though.

According to a review of the cingular 8800, the telenav features are going to cost 10usd per month. does this mean that the gps itself will be unusable without this fee? I don't want telenav, I just want to be able to use the gps with something like google maps or get raw latitude/longitude coordinates. am I going to have to pay 10usd a month?

From the rim employee who was working on the 8800 he said the best part of the unit was the gps. Sounds like it is going to be fairly good.

The RIM 8800 web page also list BBmaps support. So you should be ok without telenav. I think cingular is just advertising it as a valueadded service. Telnav is still new on cingular so they are trying to get the word out about it.
