How functional will the WiFi be? Will it be able to surf on any WiFi connection and not use the cell phone to search?

Wirelessly posted (Cingular 8100 Pearl: BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I think the purpose of the question is to determine if the upcoming wi-fi (the one BG has pics of) is worth waiting for and skipping the debut release of the 8800c.

If knowing wi-fi would be limited to those on a BES or TMO hotspot accounts and not your own home wireless LAN or a free hotspot zone, it would aid in the decision to buy now or wait until later.

Exactly, I should have been more specific. I apologize for the poorly written post, especially for my first on the board.

I understand that this release will not have WiFi, but when (and if) the WiFi version is released (on Cingular/AT&T, TMO or whatever) will it be limited as stated above or not? Being able to use the unit like a PPC over a wireless network will be a decision on which carrier I go with.

In Boy Genius's post on the BB 8800 browser he mentions that browsing over wifi was fast. So it sounds like at least some models will be able to browse over wifi.

There's a rumor floating around that the 8800 has crippled WIFI by RIM for specific carriers due to money paid for using RIM services. Can anyone confirm this? If so then would it be possible to hack the OS to enable WIFI? I know this would void the warranty but just curious.

But it doesn't show the Cingular logo either... There are plenty of 8800 photos but I have yet to see a confirmed photo of a release model. That's what really matters.

I doubt very seriously that Blackberry's website (at one time) would post a photo of a variation of the '88 with a Wi-Fi icon present, with no intention of rolling one out eventually.

I'm with BG's theory right now - he had BB8820's perusing his site last month, I believe - those may be Wi-fi'ers.

As to which carrier gets the goods - no one will no for sure until a press release drops. But me being greedy hopes TMO gets it first.

One would tend to think that any future blackberry with WiFi support will have the same functionality as the 7270 that is currently available.

I plan on using my WiFi 8800(x) on my corporate LAN so I can do VoIP calls via the AVAYA phone system and an AVAYA .alx file on the blackbery. This currently works great with the 7270 Blackberry and my Nokia e61.

Come on RIM!!!

A bit off-topic, but you can find pictures of the 8800 device line at RIM's corporate website.

It is my understanding the 8820 will be out mid year and will have WiFi. I was told they were trying to work out technical issues that had something to do with switching/managing the cellular network and Wifi connections on the same device.
