My first 8800 squeeked on both sides when pressed. Was VERY annoying and gave the impression of a poorly made, cheap phone. I returned it for different reasons (poor keyboard), and the new 8800 I got in the mail is rock solid. No squeaks whatsoever. Seems construction quality varies greatly from unit to unit.

Mine is the exact same way - I'm not sure what is causing it and I don't see a way to tighten it.

i returned my 8800 today, i can't live with sqeeky sides for 450 bucks and the big size in comparison to my pearl... waitung for the 8300 :D

Exchanged my 8800 for a new one yesterday for various software issues.The new one felt tight as can be all through yesterday and today!
However,tonight the SQUEAKS have begun! I'm really let down by the build quality of such a top shelf device.Shame on RIM for us to even have to make a thread about something like this!

I put dental floss in the tops and it does not sqeak near as bad now.

You can't see it. I just shoved it in the top sides cut it and shoved the rest in with my fingernail.

Yesterday was day 30, so I exchanged my squeak toy. The new one was solid....yesterday. Today, squeaking by the USB port (which is where my 1st one started).

As of tonight my 8800 is in full blown Squeak mode.3 days old and it feels like it's a couple of years old already.
Also 2 cold resets today.I think my 8700 is coming out of retirement.

About the only thing I can add is my 8800 started squeaking about 3 days out too and does not seem to have gotten much worse. I put the shieldzone on mine and it looks so nice with it that I can't bear to bring this one back. I'm outside the 30 days anyhow.

My squeek hasn't gotten worse but the sides have loosened up more. On the USB port side, I can put my finger nail in between the silver plastic and body.

Maybe test units were built differently cause I can't imagine no one would have noticed this while testing.

Anyway, I'm outside of the 30 days now and with the 8300 around the corner, this squeeky 8800 will be on ebay soon.

I exchanged my 1st unit close to day 30 because it was squeaky and the sides felt "puffy". My second unit is much more solid (still squeaks a little) but my W key is not responsive enough so I have constant typos. And it likes to freeze during InfoSpace. I should have kept the 1st puffy one - everything else worked perfectly. meh I'll be calling Cingular to get another shipped out.

Don't worry, WD-40 is safe with plastics. I've used it on a variety of plastics over the years and there is no sign that it was ever applied.

Slight squeak and movement...funny, I just jumped on here to see if others noticed this.

I already had to tighten the battery cover up. Simply cut a business card in half and put it on top of the battery and slid the cover back in place. Tight and good as new now. Plus my contact information is in there

Side wise, I've not looked into it too much, but will either put something in there....like the dental floss fix, or I will use a dry silicon spray.....goes on a bit wet, but dries quickly. Often used to fix squeaks on dashboards or doors of cars that I've had and had squeaks develop on. I'd rather tighten it up though.

As the OP said, I just wound the dental floss in there and used an exacto to carefully press in any excess.

Mines squeeky on both sides and its annoying, makes the phone feel cheap, the chromed parts pull away from the sides ever so slightly nearer the top of the phone

I just did the same thing. Regular dental floss, no wax kind and viola! No more squeaks. It really only needed it and penetrated around the corners. I hope it holds tight. It will be funny explaining dental floss in there should it ever have to go in for service

I think the 8300 series is the one alot us have been waiting for, and it looks to be put together a little better. No chrome plastic sides sounds like no squeaks to me, guess we'll just have to wait and see!

I have the launch one and the squeak got so bad that it happened with any key press. Any way I was also having a problem with the battery cover as it was too tight to pull out. I was at the Cingular store and was speaking to my friend there and he gave swapped the battery cover with one that was returned. So far it is going on two weeks with no squeak. We tried his too which had a squeak and switched the cover and that one stooped. I am no thinking that this is all caused by the battery cover.

I exchanged mine on the 30th day, just because of the sides. So far, so good. I must admit that I now use causion when I remove the phone from the holster. Hopefully it will stay solid.

Something a little different. My original phone was shapphire blue, the new one is black. There are additional stock photos in the media file and it now defaults to the home screen automatically from the app screen after about five seconds. Minor differences that I've noticed so far.

The newer 8800's that are shipping are indeed a dull shade of blue (almost black)
Compared to the original ones that are sapphire blue. I have a thread in here somewhere about the color. As for the squeak, no dice guys! Feels rock solid and then after you get to day 3, get ready for that all to annoying squeak to surface. Nothing you can really do about it, some people have used dental floss
or WD-40. But it's just something that occurs once you break the phone in.

Yes, get used to it. I exchanged mine after 3 weeks because of a sticking "7" key and the "new" one was squeaking by day 2....

mines squeaks like crazy that actual housing squeaks along with the side. when you just pick it up, mine makes crazy sounds. will cingular do an exchage cause of this?

I totally agree with this and am also letdown by RIM. My experience with BB has been bulletproof hardware AND OS. This is quite shocking IMO. The 8800 can sound like a 65 Ford after only a few days...

When mine started creaking I first thought I was being a bid too OCD and then it got a tad worse. I went to the internet and after Google'ing "squeaky 8800" realized I was not alone.

it's safe. the spray doesn't get inside the electronics and it's a dry in about 5 seconds. combined with the floss trick, mines perfect.
