The 8800 will not work on Nextel as it's a GSM device.

I am very surprised that a Nextel rep knew about the 8800, when half of the Cingular reps didn't eve know it existed.

I never even looked into Nextel and I am assuming its not GSM, although it uses a SIM, is this correct? If its not GSM, it cannot be used with an 8800, even if it is unlocked.

I know that and you know that, but my co worker is really playing me for dumb.

So he shuts the door and calls the guy and then comes back in my office and says

Him: " So I just got off the phone with the guy and he said I could have the 8800 in 3-6 weeks, but it will be on the Sprint Network not Nextel"

Me: "How is that possible, it is a GSM device and Sprin is CDMA"

Him: "Well he said that Cingular is the first one with the phone and then Sprint usually gets them 3 - 6 weeks after that"

Me: "Sprint is not even projected to get this phone"

Him "Well that's what he said"

Me: Well if that is the case why doesn't Sprint have the Pearl"

Him: " I don't know"

Me: "Well maybe they will"

WOW.

Ohh PLEASE keep us updated and let us know how this turns out. I think it's kinda funny how most cellphones reps know nothing about what they are trying to sell. Plus, i would like to see your friends reaction in about 3 weeks when he realizes the Sprint/Nextel rep was was(assuming he is), LOL.

Reps are going to say anything to keep you as a customer or sell you something.....

Very rarely are the stores accurate on much of anything.

As a matter of fact, most people avoid the stores like the plague, and instead order online or via the carrier's sales department. Typically much faster delivery without the hassle of taking a number in some store and waiting behind 15 people coming down to pay their delinquent bill.

Our Company Nextel Rep has been telling us for almost a year now that a New Blackberry will be out on Nextel. I know about the 8703 coming to sprint from this board before she know about it.

It's funny cause your friend said the 8800 is coming to "Nextel". Then said that he could get the 8800 on "Sprint" in 3-6 weeks. Even if he can get it, there's a difference there.

I have a client with BB's on Nextel and one of them wanted an 8700. In order to do this, they had to create a Sprint account for the guy and get him an 8700. Even then, he didn't have PTT like the Nextel's.

It's strange cause even though they're Sprint/Nextel, they're still seperate. Personally, I don't see "Nextel" coming out with a new BB again.

OK so, To dispell all rumors on the 8800 and Sprint Nextel... here is the deal. Sprint will be getting the 8800 and it WILL be in the Q2. It WILL be a world phone so both CDMA and GSM roaming OUTSIDE of the US. So the Nextel rep I'm sure has heard that Sprint Nextel will have the 8800 but is misinformed on what network it will run on.

When in Q2? I'm not sure. I think in May. So, I recommend having a little patience and waiting for the world phone version that will be rev. A capable... DO NOT settle for EDGE speeds... why anyone buy a $300 phone with EDGE is beyond me.

Some of us are old enough to remember Sprint bad mouthing BlackBerrys, and denying the need for either the BB or a world phone.

I remain sceptical of Sprint's ability/desire to have a world phone. To date, none of the CDMA carriers have made much of an effort at world phones. No denying that EVDO rocks - I have an EVDO PC card to compliment my BB, but most business users - repeat, business users - will not noticed the difference on a BlackBerry.

Well, Sprint currently has various Blackberry's and a world phone in their portfolio. I can't recall Sprint as a company bad mouthing blackberry's but so be it. Don't let past decision influence current prejudices. Sprint and Verizon will both have one in Q2. In fact, you should save yourself some money by getting an 8800 with rev A and pay $10 a month for tethering. (sprint's is $10 but i'm not sure how much Verizon charges to tether.

If you work for Sprint, it would be nice to be up front about it.

Actualy, the ability to tether with a blackberry is included in your Blackberry data blan, no extra charge (SPRINT)

Edge provides phone and email services just as fast as any.

EVDO is nice for navigation programs, maps pop up a bit faster. Tethering is obviously much better. Web browsing is slightly faster, most of the limitation there is the device itself and its rendering of pages.

Sprint and verizon have had world capable phones for years: nextel i930, samsung ip-a790, samsung ip-i830, motorola a840 etc... They compare poorly to just getting your own unlocked GSM phone for travel but they work.

Let's hope that one of these days RIM gets a grown-up processor that can (at least) compare with WM fastest processors. I realize that battery life has to be balanced, but there's certainly room for improvement, especially with RIM's drive into the media circus.

Absolutely true.

The 8x00 processors are among the fastest in the market.. 312MHz.. Many WM devices like the dash are still using 200MHz..

Seriously, you know that to not be true. When 512/624mhx processors have been available for 2 years+. With a much more media centric market that RIM is targeting and banking on, a higher standard is going to be a necessity.

btw - The Dash is stripped-down WM (Smartphone Edition) with lower demands than PPC/PPC Phone Edition.

For clarity, you were addressing EVDO, which is why I supplied the models mentioned.

You're right in that all current GPS apps must use a data connection. Time for RIM to free up the microSD so it can be utilized by more than the kids for video/music.
