Default GPS and being tracked. Can i take it out? - 02-28-2007, 04:06 AM

Is their anyway I can take off the GPS feature on this 8800.

Its just scary to me how it can pinpoint you within 10 metres.

I think the feature is great but I just dont want my company to track me.

I have tried everything to remove the GPS software on the berry but nothing seems to work.

Is their a blackberry whiz that knows what to do to take it off or disable it? Can i get a technical answer pls.

thanks

If you are on a BES, there's nothing you can do with the software if your employer wants to track you. Really, your only solution is to cover the BB in foil, which will probably prevent the receiver from working.

Of course this presumes that your employer wants to track you.

If you phone is provided by your employer he would be quite upset and could fire you for disabling the GPS tracking. When you are off duty you can turn the phone off if your job does not require it be on and use a personal cell phone when not at work.

Just like at the office, you boss has the right to track your computer usage, during working hours he can track your location, if he wishes.

Paranoid?

Am I missing something big here? I thought that the GPS in the 8800 was a receiver. Your employer can't track you. Your carrier can, through cell tower triangulation with the E911 service. That is a legal requirement.

Yea I don't see anything in BES that lets me "track" people. So I wouldn't worry about it.

QUOTING THE BB8800 SITE:

"The BlackBerry® 8800 comes with a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS). Use it with a mapping application like BlackBerry® Maps and you can view your current location with greater accuracy and track your route to your target destination.

Built-in GPS also gives you access to a wide range of other Location-Based Services (LBS), like employee and resource tracking, social networking and more."

Of course, if his employer really has reason to track him, they already know he posted here looking for a way out.

Aluminum Deflector Beanies, I just ordered a dozen of them. I could have gone to Dollar store and purchased a few rolls of aluminum foil, but wasn't sure it would perform as well as the Genuine item!

Now that we can play music, the RIAA is gonna be all over the gps thing. I can see them swooping down to catch me in the act playing my ripped Beatles cds walking through Time Square.

Well per the BES IT Policy it will at least display a message if you are being tracked, it will use a custom message entered, or a default "Your location is currently being tracked". At least you'd know if someone was monitoring your location...

Yes, the device is supposed to support E911, which means that if you dial 911 from your phone it will report your location to the operator.
I'll be interested to know what other LBS stuff the device supports - SUPL and RRLP both allow a lot of interesting things to be done, like have the operator request your position, or you requesting your position from the network etc (or network aiding for better GPS response). All pretty nifty.
