On the 8700 I could quickly roll the wheel to wake up the device (ie make the screen liteup to check the time or see if I had any new messges).

Is there an option to do this for the 8800.

I wonder if it is possible for someone to write an app that does this? From what I can tell, rolling the trackball when it is sleeping serves no purpose.

I guess if it did work, then people would be *****ing about it always going off when they didn't want it to.

On a similar note I have searched to no avail. Is there a way to change the time before the screen goes off. I have checked all the different settings and can find nothing on "sleep". I am hoping I have just overlooked it.

That ones easy. Options>screen/keyboard>backlight timeout. I think the default is 30seconds.

I am glad the trackball does not wake the device. The screen would be comming on all the time while in my pocket. If I went on a 8 hour hike I would have a dead battery when done.

If you ever had a Pearl like I did- You would know why it is Dormant while off. When the pearl first came out on T-Mobile, I got one and had it unlocked to use on Cingular. When the phone rang in your pocket (with that first version of software), if you hit the trackball removing it (almost unavoidable), it would either answer the phone, or hang up the phone. I was a hassle. I love the sleeping "sphere"- it only wakes up like a full moon when told to.

I experienced this on my 8700C periodically after an OS upgrade. Even though the Backlight timer was set to 30 seconds, it would actually go out after about 5 seconds. I also had a situation where the Backlight stayed on without timing out at all. In both cases a battery pull reboot fixed the problem.
