Random cold resets -
03-16-2007, 09:58 AM
A few times a day, I experience a cold reboot (with the hour glass). This happens just as I am putting the BB into its case. I see the indicator light turn solid red for a couple of seconds and then I get a reboot.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

I was hoping this was something I did! :(
I just got my 8800 yesterday, did a restore, but had some issues because I tried to restore before everything was activated on the Enterprise, so I had to do it a 2nd time... but everything looked good.
Twice yesterday while I was talking on the phone, the line went dead, the screen blanked, the red light went on, then off, then the hourglass came up. First time I pulled the battery thinking that I needed a fresh start since getting the BB. After the 2nd time happened, I thought I would come search here and saw your post...... PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! I don't want to own a Treo!
ps-> I had had no issues with other BBs and have owned a 75xx?, 7100, 8700, 8100, now 8800.

I experienced the same problem and I returned to the store I purchased my 8800 from and they gave me a new one right away. As long as its under 30 days from when you purchased the phone Cingular will take it back. Otherwise you have to get it shipped from the company and then you get a refurbished phone not a new one.

I got mine from Amazon, so do I have to go through them or can I go to a Cingular store? (corporate store that is).

I know there are 2 of us with this problem and I don't want to steal the thread... BUT, I'm running very few apps (Nothing but the standard ones that you have to run). The problem hasn't occured today but I haven't used the phone portion except for short calls.

Well, experiment and use the phone for a long time. And as for apps, when this happened, were you running at most ten?

I will try to recreate. I think the most apps I've had running was 6-7, since I just got it and haven't loaded it up. I install the TeleNav then realized it was a pay service (no thanks) so I will remove. And I installed BBWeather. Hopefully I can recreate this weekend. Thanks,

For what it's worth, my random cold restarts went away when I took BBWeather off my 8800

I would be trying that BUT, I installed BBWeather last night after I had the 2 cold resets. I didn't have one today. I will overuse the phone and see what happens. My only common trait for each was that I was on the phone.

My only common trait is when I put the BB back into the leather case. I thought it might be an app issue, but I have had nothing but standard apps (contacts, calendar, etc.) running when this has happened.
I spoke to me IT department and I am getting it replaced next week. I had an 8700c which never had any problems.

This cold reboot started happening to me about a week after purchasing the 8800. Mine does a cold boot at least once a day and it is usually when I am taking it out of the holster, however, I have also had cold boots when trying to make a call on the unit, but when calling thru the Jawbone, it does not cold boot. My cold boots still happen with or without BBWeather. I am not running any additional apps when I get the cold boot. Glad to see it is not just me. Hopefully, someone out there will come up with a reason this happens and then we can all live happily, or at least until the 8300 comes out.

Mine rebooted once when I started my car - was connected to my BT headset and my car has built-in BT.

I got the same problem. Hourglass everyonce in a while.
mine ended up being simple.
Everytime I hit the top of the phone (...even ever so slightly) it would reboot.
happened a lot when i was puting it in the case. you can test it out to see if this is your problem as well by taking a couple fingers and taping the top of the phone near the power button (no, i wasnt pressing the power button to turn it off) and seeing if it reboots. I was happy i found this out cause i had worked out in my mind all the steps a needed to take to see if it was a software problem and that would have been a lot more work.
mine was an amazon.com phone...first shipment. They're sending me a replacement as we speak..
hope this helps.

Problem and solution! -
03-17-2007, 07:30 PM
Thanks, again. So now everyone who has this problem should get a phone exchange. Thanks for solving and finally pinpointing a solution. So, if you got it through a 3rd party company contact them for noncarrier people. If you got it using a carrier to buy the phone, call them and ask for a phone exchange by mail, and tell them its a manufactures defect. And make sure its under the warrenty. Again thanks for the help.

Yes, mine seems like any strong tap on the back on the phone and I think that sometimes when I put the 8800 into th case it is causing that "tap."

Thanks! -

Thanks to everyone's for your input. I too am glad that I'm not the only one but I am disappointed that there are some flaky devices out there. If this was my first exp with a BB, I would be pretty turned off. I can concur that it is happening a variety of times-- when I put it in the case it happened 2x this weekend, when I plugged into car charger it did it, and since I use the mute button all the time to go into standby, the pressing on the top has certainly happened. I'm contacting Amazon today about a replacement.

JBaughb - stupid question-- I can't find anywhere in the Amazon documentation or website about a Replacement. There is definitely a process for returns put that is the first 30 day cancelation process, not returns. How did you get a replacement and so quick (ie before your phone got back to them)?

Don't know if these two are directly related as my problem only occurs when I'm doing something with the phone (i guess I could be missing the reboots). Here is another thread on reboots:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...00-8100-a.html
I clearly have had resets from touching the top and also from plugging it in or putting in case. Don't think that would be network related.

I just logged into my "account" through amazon.com and there was a way for me to file a complaint about a current order and i said the phone was defective. the new one should come any day now.
hope this helps...

Thanks. I will try. The strange thing is that I haven't had a reset since Saturday?!
