Default 8800 firmware update wishlist - 04-28-2007, 10:56 AM

I really like the 8800 but I have short wish list of improvements that RIM could implement with a simple firmware update.

1. Allow full screen video with their media player. The beautiful 320x240 screen with 30fps only plays a 320x180 video, less in 4:3 ratio.

2. Allow the Alarm clock to access and play full size MP3 audio files.

3. Include a graphic EQ for the music player (and include a 2.5 to 3.5mm adapter...the stock stereo headphones are terrible)

1. The media Player from Dollars5 (on this forum) will do this.

3. Dollars5 is working on this feature for their mediaPlayer but not quite there yet. Try the adapters from Seidioonline.com. The retractable one is my favorite and use it all the time. Other adapters usually don't work. Seidio's are the best.

The trackball should be able to be used to adjust volume in a call...

- faint clock on sleep screen

I'd also recommend the Seido adapter... why use the stock headphones anyway?

True, but you have to pay for that software. Plus if your BES policy doesn't allow 3rd party installs (both OTA or via application loader, you're SOL)

What about those adapters from eBay? (like: eBay.ca: 2.5mm to 3.5mm OEM Adapter Motorola ROKR E1 V360 MPX220 (item 170106852017 end time 01-May-07 15:22:18 EDT)) Or better yet pick one up locally.

1. Charging light turns off when complete (rather than flashing like an airport landing beacon)

I just loaded the Dollars5 media player - and it was super sluggish with a fully loaded 2GB SD card and a large play list. 3-5 seconds delay to play the next song when shuffling. The file functions were buggy

This one is getting uninstalled until the next revision

RIM: Please add two more simple updates:

- Add BBClarity font size 6 as an official font size. The "trick" switching to System font and back just to get to this hidden font size is annoying.

- Include the ability to save individual theme configuration settings. It's a pain to have to re-sort icons, change fonts etc, every time you switch themes.

Also, when my screen is locked I have a message that if my BB is lost tells the person how to contact me. However, if you touch any key it gives you the mini-window on how to unlock the BB (which COVERS my message) and then my message is gone once the BB is unlocked.

Am I missing something in a setup? I don't want a person finding my phone to have to know how to use a BB and locate my user info.

Who's that peekin' in my window?...POW....nobody now.

Three seemingly "simple" items are what I would like:

1. Charging light turns off (or goes solid) when charging is complete. This was mentioned before and appears to be a bug in the current release of the firmware, so it ought to be fixed in the next one.

2. Ability to assign categories (or, at least, maintain categories assigned in Outlook) to calendar items. I know, I know, this is a longstanding gripe with the BB software across all models, but really, there's simply no rational explanation for why it's not incorporated.

3. Color-coded LED alerts ([Color 1] for messages, [Color 2] for missed calls, [Color 3] for voicemails, etc.). I don't even necessarily need/want the ability to "assign" colors to a particular event (although that would be nice), I just want it to have a different color for different events. I know BB Alerts is available to do this, but it does not operate in quite the same manner as the "default" BB LED alert scheme.

That's it for me.

I just checked this again on my CW 8800 and my light does not come on, constant or flashing, while I am charging. I get the little lightning bolt next to my battery meter but no light action.

I'll add a few more related to microSD storage

- ability to run applications from the microSD card
- ability store databases to the microSD card
- ability to save email attachments to the microSD card
- ability to backup and restore your data (.ipd file) directly to microSD
