Default Trackwheel click not working - 05-05-2007, 12:32 AM

My 8800 track wheel push (enter) got super sensitive, (1 click would take me two menus deep) and now the track wheel push will not work. I have to use the enter key. Has anybody else had this problem?

Try a reboot (pull the battery) but sounds like a hardware problem.

The other day my trackball wouldn't scroll up! I had a can of air and figuring it would be best to blow it out from the back blasted away with no success. Then I shot it from the front and that fixed it.

Just remember to hold the can upright when you spray or it may freeze something and cause more damage.

Yeah, that works usually for scrolling problems. I've not heard of problems with dirt and clicking the ball, but it's worth trying first.

Default Its getting worse - 05-07-2007, 11:46 AM

The click ball is now supper sensitive. It will push click without being touched. This resulted in 50+ drafts being created overnight while I was sleepings. There has to be something trapped behind the track ball that I cannot get out. I tried forced air but that didn't work. I called cingular and they are sending out a replacment. This sucks . I love this phone and hope this does not happen again.

my phone was having the same exact problem. the "push" on the trackball was super sensitive (and had a memory). so when i would scroll through the menu it would think i had pushed down several times. then when in an email it would catch up and start acting crazy sending messages and things like that. i have since just exchanged the phone. hopefully this doesn't happen with the new phone. funny thing is that this started about a week or two ago. at the time i couldn't find anyone else with similar problems. now it seems like there are numerous people with the same problem.

I am having the same problem. Sometimes the trackball will not detect a press. Other times it is so super sensitive that the lightest touch will cause it to detect a press. And a normal press will cause it to register two presses. This has also caused numerous drafts and one night 50 blank SMSs to be sent. Sometimes the screen will constantly light up as it sits locked on my desk because it thinks there was a key press. I am going to try to return it to Vodafone UK for another one but it is so inconvenient because (1) I will not have my BB for at least a week while they repair/replace it and (2) I have applications which are registered to the PIN on this device and when they replace it I will need to buy the software again.

I am wondering whether this is a very common problem with the 8800 and whether I should not be changing to a different model, or different manufacturer.

My guess is that this will become a BBF FAQ topic if not so already.

I had similar problems with a brand-new Cingular-branded 8800. You had to push the trackball very hard to get it to click and sometimes it would click twice, taking you two menus deep. I called and had the device replaced under warranty. The new 8800 is an AT&T branded device and the trackball is 100 percent better! The new device has more of a force-feedback feel to the trackball and clicks properly. The old device had a very smooth feel to the trackball and it was hard to tell if it was working properly.

I'd recommend that you complain to Blackberry service and get the device replaced under warranty. You won't regret it!

Try going into options/Screen keyboard and changing the trackball sensitivity

I've had two 8830's replaced for this same problem. The cause (as it was told to me) was because I carry it in my pocket, and not in the holster. Dust and lint are one problem (that can be remedied by several different methods), but if there is constant pressure on the trackball, it can damage the click button. I REFUSE to use the holster, because I can't stand having something hanging off my belt (unless it's a sidearm ), so I still carry it in my pocket. But, I used to carry it with the top side of the BlackBerry to my body (in an effort to protect the face, should I run into something), and I switched to carrying it topside-out. I haven't had a problem, since!!

I've had my phone replaced twice for this issue. Call customer service and they'll replace it.

Good day.

I've had this exact same problem. I'm on my third replacement from Verizon. I have found that taking a credit card and poping out the trackball I can blow into the whoel and get myself back in working order again. I also refuse to carry it in the bulky holster that BB bundles with the phone. I am very fearful that this will continue to be a problem and BB seems to be moving all phones to the trackball instead of click wheel :(

RIM is a client of mine and I have a contact in tier-3 support that I've reached out to. Will post what I hear shortly.

No reply from RIM, so I returned the thing to Verizon. Hopefully RIM can address this problem, as I'm pretty sure all new releases will feature the trackball instead of the scroll wheel.....but for now I'm happily switched back to my 8703.

Just heard back from RIM. The issues reported with the trackball are being addressed in the next lineup of phones. No date given on release yet.

I've had no issues with the trackball. Used a Pearl for year and have the 8320. Occasionally it gets a piece of dirt in there but pushing down and rolling it always gets it out. It's been more reliable than the trackwheel for me.

Update....I ordered a replacement trackball, and still have the same problem. I took the trackball out and have noticed my problem (barely pushing on the trackball causes one or more "click" actions without actually clicking the trackball) is caused by the sensor underneath the trackball. I can barely touch it with a pen or similair and it will "trigger" the click action instead of only happening when pushing in on this sensor enough to produce the "click" sounds/action.

I have just sent my Blackberry back for the third time. I usually wear it in the holster and don't have problems. But if I carry it in my pocket for any length of time (like last weekend) then the trackball becomes oversensitive and the device is useless. But it is a huge inconvenience to be without my device for two weeks, again.

Am I wrong to think that I should be able to carry my phone in my pocket without it breaking? Isn't this a basic requirement for a "mobile" phone? I am thinking about going back to Nokia (perhaps the E61i).

if you just have to have the phone in your lint filled pocket why not get a slim pouch to put the phone in first! Seems simple to me!

I carry mine in a clip on holster by seidio and do not have this problem.
