Question Migrating data/apps from 8703 to 8830... - 05-16-2007, 08:54 AM

Do I simply:

1. Backup the 8703
2. Install software from 8830 CD
3. Restore backup to the 8830

Would that work? I have a few 3rd party apps with data (like PD Lists) that I need to restore.

Actually your best migration plan would be to make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager (ver.4.2 Service Pack 1) installed on your PC.

Then use the Switch Device Wizard within DM. That will get most everything moved over.

And it's always a good idea to do a backup of your old BB just prior as a safety net. Not all of your third-party apps will backup and restore either way so be prepared to download some of them again.

I used the Switch Device Wizard yesterday to move from a 7130 to an 8830. It worked like a charm and moved EVERYTHING over.

JSanders - thanks for that succinct explanation!
Quick question - I have backed my 8703e contacts into an ipd file using Desktop Manager, but no longer have the 8703e.
Will I be able to either "switch device" and transfer the contacts/address book ipd file over to the 8830 or should i just import the ipd file without using the "switch device" function?
Thx.

You can't use Switch Device without both BBs being present. At this point you will need to use the restore function in Desktop Manager. To get ONLY the address book, you will use selective restore and find the address book there.

Love it... the switch Wiz was the answer. I did have to upgrade my SplashID app, it kept crashing and SplashData had a fix that they posted in March.

Data from Pocket Lists, Shop Magic, etc?

Thanks!
