Default Software v4.2 SP2 and 4GB microSD cards - 05-23-2007, 11:50 AM

Does anyone know if the sp2 allows the 8800 to use the 4GB microSD cards?

That would require an update to the Handheld OS. Desktop Manager 4.2 has nothing to do with the capacity constraints on the handheld. As of now, I believe the 2GB microSD card is still the max.

i think it's more of a memory mapping issue and not software related.

if the 8800 cannot support more than 2 GB, i doubt a software update will correct that.

4GB cards are stuctured differently than 2GB cards.

Actually, the first version of the 8100 software could not handle 2GB cards - only 1GB cards. Subsequent versions supported it.

Oh ok, I was under the impression that an OS update was included with the Desktop manager SP2.

If you look at the specs on the Curve it states "This smartphone accepts microSD cards; the amount of storage is determined by card capacity". It doesn't specify any limitations so maybe it does support the 4GB cards. Guess we will have to wait and see.

I don't follow the memory card business that closely but aren't the 4GB+ cards considered microSDHC (High Capacity) and the interface is different? These are probably backwards compatible if formated for a 2gB block but I think the device (Blackberry) slot needs to be compatible with this type of card for it to work where the 1gB and 2gB cards are just microSD. My guess is that it is probably more than a firmware upgrade.

MORE STORAGE FOR YOUR TUNES, FLICKS AND PICS
For added storage of music, videos and pictures, the BlackBerry Curve comes with a microSD expansion slot. It supports up to 2GB cards that are available today and will automatically support 4GB cards that are expected to become available later this year.

I read on the "other" forum that someone tested (successfully) a 4GB card in their 8830. I assume it must have an updated OS from the 8800?

(The thread was meant as a conversation about the 8300 and the 4GB card, but this guy chimed in with results re 8830)

Correct. It's 4.2.2 apps instead of 4.2.1
