Default 8830 won't play music from both earphones - 05-31-2007, 08:19 PM

Why would you sell a media device that wont play music out of both earphones. Is my device defective? Can anyone else help me with this one?

i noticed this, too...
i only have my jabra stereo headphones laying around right now:
Jabra C120s
and i seem to remember something about the LG VX9900 (enV) not playing stereo depending on the model of headphones being used...

I ordered some sennheiser MM50s, but they probably wont come till next week...
i should have access to another pair over the weekend; ill report back with my findings...

anyone else??

I have read that you need a special adapter (sold by verizon of course) or to get certain headphones that work correctly. Supposedly if I remember correctly, try playing the music then plugging in the headphones, someone on here or another board said that made his work in "stereo".

Yeah I was using a cheap radio shack adapter. I went to a Verizon store and got a better quality adapter. Works like a dream. Again, I guess you get what you pay for.

so ive now tried 2 stereo headsets and i still only get left side sound...
i then called verizon support, and the best answer they could give me was that the spec sheets dont state stereo compatible...

i guess ill head to the vzw store tomorrow and try to pick up an adapter...

Did you try the method above? Start the music then plug in the headphones?

found a review here:
BlackBerry 8830 - Phone Reviews by Mobile Tech Review
in the middle of the review, it states:
Quote:
Like the in-call voice, the music quality is good through the built-in speaker. Unlike the BlackBerry 8800, the BlackBerry 8830 from Verizon doesn’t include a wired headset. We tried three 2.5mm stereo headsets on the BlackBerry 8830, none works correctly with the device.
verizon... the more i love them, the more i hate them...

yes, please jackyer, what adapter are you using?
can you post a pic of the packaging or something?

i just went to my local vzw store and they tried to sell me the jabra stereo headset that i already have and told them didnt work... so i tried their jabra on their floor model 8830, and guess what?... no stereo...

the store manager tried to get me to leave my 8830 with the tech support guys 'in the back' so they could try to figure out why it wasnt stereo... i said 'it didnt work with your floor model, im not leaving mine!' ... i guess im not going back to that store... idiots...

then i stopped in the att store to try and get this mythical 'packaged in the 8800 box' stereo headset... they didnt have any separate ones and wouldnt let me try one from the box...

damn, im frustrated...

Okay i can tell you how it works with my seido adapter. I have to plug in the headphones into the adapter and the adapter into the phone before i start the music player to get stereo audio. Tell me if that works for you. I think it has something to do with it recognizing it as a headset.

Link for the adapter please?
this: STANDARD AUDIO ADAPTOR FOR 8100/8800/8830 - ADA-BB8100M35FST
or this: AUDIO ADAPTOR WITH BUILT-IN MICROPHONE AND ANSWER BUTTON (2.5MM MALE JACK TO 3.5MM FEMALE JACK) FOR BLACKBERRY 8100/8800/8830 - ADA3-BB8100M35FST

Also, a (different) vzw store near me was out of the adapter Jackyerlate mentioned, so I may end up ordering it via my b2b site.
I've ordered the stereo headset direct from RIM:

much thanks for everyone's help!

I had the same issue with other mini adapters. Others have mentioned already, but this adapter from seidio also worked perfect for me on all he headphones and aux jacks I've used with it:

i had the same problem. I went to the verizon store, and they opened up some verizon issue 2.5mm headphones and it worked...i guess it only works with 2.5mm headphones and not 3.5mm with an adapter.

Hi, this is Lisa from MobileTechReview.com chiming in. Here's something even weirder-- after trying 3 different 2.5mm stereo earbud headsets (one from a WinMo device, one for the Treo and yet another for Samsung) none worked, as we mentioned in the review.

But today we just got in the Plantronics Pulsar 260 which is an A2DP stereo Bluetooth headset that happens to use a transmitter that you connect to Plantronics 2.5mm wired stereo earbuds (looks like the Plantronics MHS213 earbuds to me), and they work! Both channels play through. And the stereo BB headset that came with my personal 8800 works, so that's another option for those looking for stereo.

All of these headsets use the exact same connector with identical ring placement. It really makes no sense unless the 8830 is very particular about impedence level on the headsets.

as my quest for a working pair of STEREO headphones for the 8830 continues...

Motorola® Bluetooth Headset S9

this states that these headphones (motorola s9) are compatible with the 8830!!

this would be unbelieveable if this is true!!

i just tried my own bluetooth stereo headset, and it does not appear the 8830 supports a2dp...
as a matter of fact, when the connection to the bt stereo headset is active, the media player will only play via the spearkerphone or the handset...

the bluetooth properties for the headset shows:
hands-free unit
headset
a/v remote control
audio sink

the bluetooth properties for my samsung wep-200 headset shows:
hands-free unit
headset

i read in another thread somewhere that a2dp may come in the form of a device software update...

ugh again...

I have the exact problem that others are describing. I would think that RIM could have made the 8800 with a STANDARD 3.5mm headphone jack instead of this small 2.5 CR*P!! My iPod (industry standard MP3 player) uses 3.5, why not RIM?? I know that I can listen to my music through my iPod but on those rare occasions, I would prefer to carry one device around and have a few songs instead of lugging a phone & a MP3 player. I would love to get my hands around the neck of the engineer who decided on this design.

The only option I have tried is the Radio Shack adapter that converts 2.5 to 3.5 and makes use of 'stereo' and guess what, it doesn't work. Looking at pictures of the adapter on the Seido website and the 'useless' adapter I hold in my hand, they appear identical to each other.

I would love to buy the Seido adapter and see if they offer the 'miracle solution' but 6.50 in S&H is a hard pill to swallow especially when they can throw the adapter in a 50 cent envelope and ship it off.

I ran into the same problem. I ended up purchasing the Seido adapter. You can check out my review of the adapter here. I will try to post it to the reviews section soon.

you're right, there should have been a 3.5mm jack on the 88xx if they were pushing it as a multimedia device, but i think the 8300 is the big push multimedia device for RIM right now...

as for 2.5mm headsets, i dont think anyone can figure out why most standard stereo ones dont work (audio only from one side)... pdagal suggested that it may be the impedence...

the only ways i can get audio out of my 8830 are with the 'official' blackberry stereo headset (which sucks, btw), the verizon 2.5mm-3.5mm adapter (with mic and inline volume control), and the seidio 2.5mm-3.5mm adapter (with no mic).

i am sticking wth the seidio adapter and my sony earbuds.

@Entropy

I'll probably bite the bullet and buy the Seido adapter since I have invested enough time and money in this matter. Thanks for the info.

@Breakerfall

As you mentioned, I doubt if ANYONE can really point to the correct solution in this matter. The adapter either have music coming out of one side of the headphones or in my case, they do not work at all. Seido must have a 'half-assed' solution because as mentioned by others as well as by Entropy666 link, you still need to:

A: Plug the headphones into the adapter.
B: Plug the adapter into the phone.
C: Start the media player.
.
.
.
X: Stand on one leg while balancing the BB on your nose.
Y: Give a blood offering to the BB gods praying that this will work.
Z: Spend 6 bucks in shipping on a item that can fit in a small envelope.

Anyway, thanks for all that has given info. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the heads up gvannoy.

I just wanted to use the Sony headset that I was so used to instead of having to 'wear in' another set.

Here's a review I wrote for the Seidio w/mic:

I just purchased this handy little device for my new 8830. With this device you can use your favorite headphones and still plug it into the "standard" headset port on the pre-8300 models (new Curve has the standard headset size port of 3.5).

This device was pretty seamless. No one has even noticed that I've used it. I love being able to use my favorite ear buds (much too expensive to just ditch for a cheapy set that would work with this phone).

The only odd thing I found was that when I plugged it into the phone it is kinda hard to push in and pull out. That said I surely don't have to worry about it coming unplugged! One other small oddity is that there's only a 3" lead between the mic and where it connects to the phone. So, you do kinda have to put your phone "closer" to your mouth to be sure the mic catchs vocals. I haven't yet attempted to simply talk on it with the phone in my pouch still. I just assumed it wasn't meant to be like a speaker phone mic.

It has a handy call receive button (which also functions to pause music or video you might be listening to even if you're not receiving a call). Nothing unusual about it, it works like expected.

I bought this off eBay:

eBay: 2.5mm to 3.5mm Adapter Jack STEREO HEADPHONES MP3 (item 290123771689 end time Jun-03-07 09:53:25 PDT)

and it didn't work at all. Today I went to the local Verizon store and bought their $13 deal and it works great.

Hello All,
I have a Shure i4c-t Integrated Sound Isolating Earphones + Mobile Headset. This model has a 2.5 mm gold-plated, right-angle,4 conductor plug.

Here is the product description.
Shure - i4c Integrated Sound Isolating Earphones

Like everybody else, my headphones have audio playback on only one side. I'd rather not buy another pair of Shure if I don't have to. My setup would be 3.5 mm Shure and a 2.5mm male-to-3.5mm female adaptor.

Does anybody know if there is a 2.5mm to 2.5mm adaptor for the BB 8830?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

just for the record, in order to get stereo from my seidio adapter i have to:

1. plug in the adapter
2. start the media player
3. plug my earbuds into the adapter

in that order, specifically...

I purchased the Verizon adapter and at first it would not work at all. I then tried some of the suggestions on this thread, and it started working, but the volume through two different sets of headphones is very low, even when the blackberry volume is turned all the way up. Is anyone experiencing an issue with low headphone volume?

I have that same adapter and haven't had one problem with it. While the headphone volume is not as loud as some other players, I wouldn't say it was "very low" on mine.

bought verizon $12.99 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor with talk switch. didn't work on one side. moved 3.5mm jack in-and-out of adaptor slowly and now works great.

Additional Note:I have fought this issue of only one side audio for some time. THIS WORKS! Put the earphone jack into the adaptor only slightly until you get audio on both sides; wait about a minute, then plug all the way in.... STEREO!!
Might take a few trial trys.

I downloaded a free non-drm itune video that I later converted to device and my verizon headphones played decent in one ear and barely audible in another.

I then downloaded a torrent, and its sounded wonderful.

The music I burn sounds outstanding as well.

The issue may be the format of the file.

Hi, all. Just got my hands on an 8800 and invested in a 2 gig microSD card and suddenly realized I don't have a 3.5mm plug! (WTF!?!) So, I spun over to Radio Shack and bought myself the adapter pictured above... it didn't work.. went right back into the store and returned it for a standard stereo adapter. That doesn't work either... I get low low volume out of one channel and nothing out of the other.

So, I'm on the fence if I should invest in a Seido. They seem to be the only ones who offer a working adapter. My problem is, I want to plug into the AUX jack on my car's dashboard... so I'm wondering if the "plug in the adapter first, then attach the blackberry" trick is going to even work for me.

Anyone use the seido connected with an amplified input?

I'm beginning to wonder if I could make my own cable using the headset that came with the thing and splicing a 3.5 plug on the other end.

hmmm....

wow, this is a lot of thread for something like this. seems to me there are 2 or 3 things to deal with (HW related).
1. 2.5MM on the phone vs. 3.5MM which fits a standard headphones (mini)
2. 4 connector on the phone vs. 3 connectors for a headphone. (probably b/c the mike is there too).
3. Possibly impedence, which both the seido and VZW adapters seem to deal with (if this is true).

Use one of the two adapters on your phone (vzw or seido), then you can plug in either your headphones or car audio, etc. to the female plug on the adapter.

If your headphones are 2.5MM, then with the seido or vzw adapter you'll also need to convert the physical size of the 3.5MM back to a 2.5MM.

problem solved (?).

Similar discussion over here. I bought the Seidio adapter and it works fine on my 8830.
