Is anyone else out there with a 8830 having problems with the signal meter flashing from all to nothing. It is very strange and annoying to look at the 8830 and see no signal and then 1 second later it flashes to full. Anyone else? Any fixes?

Welcome To The New AT&T / Cingular Network!!! For the life of me, i could never understand how i could be sitting dead *ss still, and watch my signal strength meter jump from no bars to full amount of bars continuously.
Don't feel bad, it does the same trick on the Verizon Network also!!
I've noticed this from day one and been pissed about it from day one... it happened on my 8703e and used it as an excuse to upgrade to the 8830 only to find the same issue.
I haven't noticed it on Verizon. Matter of fact, the RF reception on the 8830 is the best of any phone I have had. I am able to make calls on the 8830 in areas that I wouldn't get signals on my other phones. I must confess though that I don't watch the display that often, but when I have, I don't see the fluctuation that you are seeing.

Matt... the poll IS referring to Verizon Wireless. ;)
The 8830 is only available on VZW.
I wouldn't worry about it. I do see it on mine, but since I have NEVER missed a call or had a service interuption I don't worry about it. Annoying perhaps, but not mission-critical.
My only curiosity in this is whether it affects battery life...
I had this same issue and called Verizon to find out what was going on. I have a 8703e and used to live in a high-rise building (23rd floor). My phone would show a full signal and then jump to no bars or one and then back up to full within a second.
Verizon's explanation was this: Because I was in a high rise building they don't gurantee service. However, they did tell me the signal bounces from full to one or none because the handset is "jumping" from one tower to the next. Another words, signal towers compete for your handset and when you are on one and you notice the signal drop and then pick back up--means you just switched towers. This will cause drop calls.
I am not claiming this is correct or that I have the answer but this is what the Verizon engineers were telling me when I had this problem. I am today no longer living in a high rise building and don't have this problem.

Thats a bogus answer from them. I can be sitting in my backyard and it happens. My wifes 7130 doesnt do it at all sitting right next to my 8830. It's definitely a glitch with the 8830.

I had the exact same issue with my 8703e, so it's not exclusive to just the 8830 unfortunately...
My wife had a Treo 700w that had the same issue as my 8703 when we lived in our high-rise condo. I also had friends that would have this issue when in my condo but all of us no longer have this issue.
i have also noticed that if you go to >options > status
watch the signal dBm meter bounce back and forth there too
mine goes from -80 to -115 and then back again all the time, just like watching the bars drop in and out. i really wonder if it is causing a loss in signal or not.
Same thing happens here, and the same thing happened on my 8703e and 7130e too. Doesn't seem to affect my current operation when it happens, I assumed it was something like switching towers or something. *shrug* -Pk

Verizon wouldn't guarantee service if you were standing in a field that was a 3 mile circle with a tower on 4 opposing sides. "I'd be more than happy to assist you with that Mr. Verizon Customer, but Verizon Wireless doesn't guarantee service in that area."
