Default Latest OS: 8800 4.2.1.164/4.2.1.101 (Chinese) SmarTone-Vodafone - 07-20-2007, 08:41 PM

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...4B931C35A169B0

Quote:
Software For BlackBerry 8800 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.1.164 (Chinese)

Package Version: 4.2.1.164
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.2.1.101
Software Platform: 2.3.0.80
File name: 8800C_PBr4.2.1_rel164_PL2.3.0.80_A4.2.1.101_SmarTo ne_Vodafone_(HK).exe
File size: 65.74MB
Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

To install extra vendor themes:

GOTO C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8800-v4.2.1.101_P2.3.0.80, rename the blackberry.alx to OLDblackberry.alx, install the attach blackberry.alx to install all vendor themes.
BlackBerry.zip

To install BBMaps For ATT/Cingular/Orange (and some other European carriers) GOTO C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8800-v4.2.1.101_P2.3.0.80, rename the LBS.alx to OLDLBS.alx, install the attach LBS.alx to install BBmap.
LBS.zip

After installing the German Vodafone, I lost all the Chinese functions. After that, three days wasted in downgrading and upgrading to get my functions back, and it is still not working. Hope your lastest upgrade will solve my problem! And thanks a lot.

Hi will this make the BB handheld only display Chinese, or does it allow you to choose Chinese or English?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if I understand you as I'm new to this. Is this the BB 8800 OS with Chinese firmware support? If so, does that mean, I'll have to flash a Canadian BB 8800 to this OS to be able to read Chinese characters?

How do you change language input from Chinese to English? Is it intuitive? What kind of Chinese input method does it support? Pinyin? Wubi?

Also, does the OS support Simplified Chinese characters? If not, what happens if somebody sends me an e-mail with Simplified Chinese characters? Will it appear as Traditional Chinese characters?

You can use alt enter to switch language input or menu to change it.

Sgt_Strider,

CBR900RR has posted some very nice screenshots for you! I added some more detailed instructions to the first post of this thread on how to update your OS.

Good luck!

Wow, I am extremely impressed. For me now, it looks like it could either be the BB 8800/8820 or the Motorola Q9. The reason why the Q9 is still in competition is because it doesn't have any extra fees like BB does with BES+Exchange. However, I am really really impressed with the BB right now. I still have two months until my contract expires.

Thanks again for the help guys!

I am using a USA version Verizon Wireless 8830 which uses CDMA technology. Assuming this Vodafone firmware is for GSM phones, will it work on my CDMA phone? Thank you in advance.

It is not going to work on your 8830 phone.

Verizon currently has the most recent OS available. There is a sticky for it in the same place you found this one.
