Default VZW BIS just about instant delivery today - 07-25-2007, 02:09 PM

Anyone else see a major increase in speed on email delivery on IMAP accts? I'm getting emails on personal accounts quicker than my email client on the desktop

Hmm...if someone could confirm that, it would be great. I'm using a Yahoo! workaround to get my .Mac email sent real-time.

What is an example of an IMAP account? It is my understanding that you are NOT referring to outlook exchange servers that BIS users poll mail from.

Correct, I am not referring to an Exchange server. I'm referring to a mail server I have running EXIM/IMAP which I have BIS polling mail from.

I wasn't saying that you should forward thru GMail. I was just stating that GMail has been instant for a while now, and wouldn't be indicative of any change with Verizon's BIS.

actually it would because its been taking 15 mins for all pop3 accounts like it should. so something new must be happening.

I've noticed that my Hotmail e-mails have been coming in very quickly today too. I have been receiving e-mails almost 40 seconds on the BB after I receive them on my desktop. I thought that was normal though, I haven't really paid too much attention to time it took before. But I guess that is what makes me a noobie to Blackberries.

I just check my IMAP servers and saw that the BIS servers are now maintaining open IMAP sessions and the the IMAP servers are pushing "new mail" notifications. I also noticed that the BIS tries IMAP first when you add a new mailbox but maybe it was doing that for a while and I just didn't notice.

Instant email via GMail has been happening for a while. My GMail has been instant for several months. GMail is pop; the original poster was talking about IMAP. So instant GMail, which has been happening for month, would not be indicative that IMAP is now instant.

Check this: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB13 816&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=19000520&stateId=1 %200%2040734879

IMAP is a protocol used for accessing email messages on a messaging server. The IMAP IDLE command is a widely implemented extension of the IMAP protocol that facilitates real-time email message delivery.

IMAP IDLE allows real-time email message delivery to a BlackBerry device by maintaining a persistent connection between the BlackBerry Internet Service and the email messaging server. Using this persistent connection, the messaging server will notify the BlackBerry Internet Service when new email messages arrive. When the BlackBerry Internet Service is notified by the messaging server that new email messages have arrived, it will connect to the messaging server and retrieve the new email message(s) and deliver them to the BlackBerry device. The benefit of this feature is real-time delivery of IMAP email messages to the BlackBerry device. The impact to the messaging server is low, as IMAP IDLE makes efficient use of messaging server bandwidth.

For more detailed information regarding the IMAP IDLE command, refer to RFC 2177.

Yes, I am well aware of the IDLE command. I guess VZW finally enabled it on their BIS? This is the first time I've seen a persistent connection from BB on my IMAP server. This is pretty awesome

I'm scratching my head because we were talking about IMAP being delivered near-instantaneously. netb0y mentioned that his GMail was instant and I simply pointed out that GMail has BEEN instant for a while now, so that in itself wouldn't mean there was a change with how BIS is handling IMAP. You then state that GMail being instantaneous WOULD mean there was a change because it was taking 15 min like all POP mail should. I AGAIN state that it wouldn't, because GMail HAS BEEN instant for a while now, so it would NOT mean there was a change in BIS and IMAP.

You're contradicting yourself; that's why I'm scratching my head.

I have had both VZW and AT&T next to one another and email coming from Gmail to BIS and the delivery was identical maybe 10 seconds max difference between the both of them.

That was in April. The current month is July.

They decided after 3 months to finally have this function kick one? Weird.

If you call your carrier and ask to speak to RIM, they can configure your Google Apps e-mail to be treated. like a Gmail account.

I know what you mean, but I got the idea here and tried it. Within 3 minutes of getting a rep, they had connected me with RIM, and another 5 minutes after that they had me up and running. I was surprised how painless it was.

Now I am totally confused. I went to the verizon BIS site and entered my google apps email address and it proceeded to activate it just fine. So two questions:

1. Do I still need to call RIM and configure the account any further? i.e push vs. poll, it seems to be on a polling interval now.

2. I also have a BES account... Is there any way to keep the BIS email from comingling with my BES mail in the messages folder? I did a quick search and didn't find any concrete workarounds.

For those using google apps, are your emails coming almost instantly? I am seeing about 15 minute lags.

Normal delivery times here...nothing close to instant...but I'm not worried about it because it's my personal email. My work email comes from BES.

Yes, instant...
if youre seeing 15 minutes, the BIS is popping your G apps mail...

call verizon, get blackberry data support, and have them xfer you to RIM support...
explain to RIM support that you have a google apps email address, and they should sort it out for you...
