Default error on desktop when syncing - 07-27-2007, 08:30 AM

Hi Guys,

I had been syncing my BB 8800 for the last 2-3 months without any problems. I tried it again today after about 2 weeks, and it gives an error.

First I get:
"BlackBerry Desktop Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". it allows me to select whether I want to send the error report or not.

When I click to get details of the error message being sent by Windows, the error signature is:
AppName: desktopmgr.exe AppVer: 4.2.2.14 ModName: ilsdk.fil
ModVer: 5.5.1.243 Offset: 000ba482

When I click to see what technical info will be sent with the error message, it says that the following file will be sent with the message:
C:\DOCUME~1\sawan\LOCALS~1\Temp\4d7d_appcompat.txt

There is also some other info which I cant copy N paste. It shows the modules (1 through 80) which are in the technical info page.

I am using Windows XP and havent made any changes to the BB, apart from buying the full version of Sudoku and installing it. I did this 3 days ago.

AFter sending the error report, the BB desktop manager shuts down itself, but the device manage stays open in the system tray. The BB display shows the 'connected to dektop', until I physically disconnect it.

Pls help.

Of corse reboot the PC and do a hard reset (pull battery) on the BB and try again, if you haven't already. If that doesn't fix it, examine you Tasks, Contacts and calendar on the BB and PC and see if anything odd stands out. I had an empty contact causing DM to crash onetime. Beyond that, I don't know.

And look at your Log in Desktop Manager, under the Sync configuration.

Hi Guys,

I have checked my entire contact list for any mistakes. I have deleted all entries without names (they had only company names).

I am still getting the same error.

But at the technical info page, it says a different file will be sent with the report:
C:\DOCUME~1\sawan\LOCALS~1\Temp\a19e_appcompat.txt

Is there anythign else I can do before I do a re-installation of the BB desktop manager software?

I also get the DM crash/error just as often as not; through 3 different versions of DM on 2 different PC's. I may get as many as 5 crashes before getting a stable one. However, once it connects, I don't get any sort of sync problems.

This occured starting from the day I got the BB and installed DM from CD and continues to today through each subsequent upgrade (via RIM or other sources).

Because I eventually get it running, I haven't sweated it. Also, when I plug the BB in, for some reason it always displays the Call Log screen -- and it's not my convenience button hitting the side of my cradle (the convenience key is mapped to NONE).

Slip, did you check contacts on *both* the blackberry and in Outlook?

I guess if it were me, I'd

* copy my pst file to another location on my PC,

* delete contacts from Outlook and the Blackberry, then sync (which hopefully doesn't error out),

* then add that copied pst file to outlook, copy a portion of contacts at a time back to your true contacts folder, syncing in between

Hope someone can give you a better idea. I know mine isn't so great, but it would be the only thing I would know to try.

At the time of syncing, it first reads from the handheld and then processes the handheld. It does this for calendar, tasks, notes/memopad and then finally the contacts. It syncs the first 3 successfully, but stops after reading all my contacts from the handheld.

from checking the log, the syncing seems to stop at the end of reading from the source file.

I have also tried syncing only the tasks, calendar and notes. It does this without any problems.

Is there any way of deleting all contacts on the BB and then syncing again from outlook?

I just looked on my 8700 (OS 4.1) and I don't see a way to delete contacts in bulk...just one at a time. Maybe someone else knows a way to do it.

Don't know what that is...at least I don't see it in my version. Are you sure you didn't just turn off contacts sync?

I don't see refresh. What does it do? Or rather, why does having it on cause the problem?

You may have already tried this, but when this same error occurred on my sync - and like you, I never had a problem until recently - this fix worked for me.

On each of your Outlook master files (Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, etc) in the upper left pane right click on the database you are syncing. When the menu appears, choose Mark All as Read for each category. Even if the database shows clear, performing this action "somehow" eliminates the error message and shutdown.

Well I dont really know what this does. Maybe the experts here can answer this question.

I had deleted a lot of entries from my contact list in outlook, which is the master database. I guess deleting on the handset was the problem, which the refresh box sorted out!

I can only use the Refresh checkbox option when either Import or Export is selected under Operation (on any of the Choose Application windows) options - if I choose synchornize then the Refresh checkbox is grayed out.

Interesting that my BB Manager worked great with an older 7290. With the 8800 its problematic.
