so i don't have an 8800 yet, but i am going to get one if someone can tell me how to do the following: view videos on the browser, or on the media player, from the sites i'm lookin at on the browser. i spent all of today going from phone store to phone store for all the carriers trying to find someone who could tell me how to view youtube or apple.com/trailer videos on the device. noone could. i suspect it was a java or flash problem or something. any help from you guys? thanks!

You can't view videos using the browser.

You can dowload video files to your PC and then move them to the blackberry using blackberry desktop manager, or simply by copying them to the SD card in your device.

They can then be played on the media player on the Blackberry.

so is there no way to go to a site that has videos, and view them on the device? without having an intermediary machine of some sort? it seems silly to not be able to watch videos from the net on the device. no third party software or anything?

One would assume that someone will comeup with a plugin that will get the browser to link with a specific media player.

No. The browser app would have the potential to be compromised if it were open to plugins, which would represent a huge security hole for corporations.
RIM has never been one to make apps that are open to third parties for just this reason.

is this pretty universal? do other handheld device's browsers also not play video? like the windows mobile devices? iphone? or is this just a blackberry thing?

As far as I know most don't play flash videos. The iPhone does, that's all I am aware of.

Not trying to start a fight here, but I've used Windows Mobile based devices in the past and they do support browser based video playing. I suppose each website has its own format and I can't recall specifically if Flash is supported, but the built-in IE browser in, for example, a VX-6700 with WM5.0, can play videos and also stream radio from a station's website. Most of the time it works, it does so because the format is Windows Media.

It's possible to view You Tube vids on Palm OS, with a third-party app (Kinoma). Multimedia _period_ is fairly new to BBOS.

The fact of the matter is there is currently no support for flash on a blackberry. Other devices/OS's do support it. There is a mobile version of flash for PPC devices. NOt sure about Palm, but somebody just stated that there is one.

It would not surprise me in the least if flash was supported eventually either via Opera or some other 3rd party app, but with the currrent OS/browser, it is not possible.

The iPhone does not play Flash videos. YouTube works because they converted all of their videos (or are still doing so) to H.264 format which the iPhone supports. Only b/c of Apple's friendship with the Google power, the owner of YouTube.

So I would guess it's pretty universal about Mobiles not playing videos/Flash in their browsers. I'm not sure about EI mobile, though.

It'll only be a matter of time before it's a universal thing, however...

The Blackberry is not a "Consumer" device, it's more of a "Corporate" device.

It's long-standing ideals is its dedication to the commercial industry. It took them so long to get camera's/memory cards into the damned things. That was a huge step, and there are a lot of company's who will NOT allow employee's to get a camera phone.

That said, there will probably be a device or a 3rd party app sometime that can view youtube/google... thought, if you need to view good/youtube flicks on your mobile device, you really need to find yourself a real hobby imo :P

yeahh when I got my Blackberry I had the intentions of viewing streaming videos on sites like google or youtube.com. But all it gave me was video codes. That sucks. but still a great device.

This is only partly correct -- it is correct that you can't view videos on the browser. But it's NOT correct that you have to download files with the PC. At least on the Pearl, you can download compatible videos from website's like tinytube through the Browser and the video will automatically open in the media player. It's not steaming -- the entire file has to download before it will play, but you can do it.

I tested this on the 8830 this weekend works great you just click "download" instead of open and it will download the video then play it like a regular video.. works GREAT! ;)

I never said you HAD to download them on the PC. I said "You can dowload video files to your PC...". I was merely giving one option. Your option works fine too. Doesn't make mine partially correct.

I had no such luck, I download it and try to play and it just hangs on loading
