Default Blackberry GPS in No Coverage Zone - 07-28-2007, 01:23 PM

I will be motorcycling from the Pacific Northwest through Canada into Alaska and back. I hope to use the GPS function on an 8820 (which I hope will be available soon). My question is this, while I may be in and out of coverage zones, what functionality will I have when there is no available cell signal?

Thanks!

Wirelessly posted (8700g: BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Lot of questions on the board about storing maps on the BB. I haven't see anyone with a soltion....so far as I know all mapping apps need cell service.

Bummer. Maybe I need to rethink the 8820 - GPS was a major feature for me. With the memory card capacity the unit has, I thought for sure it would store maps. Anyone else out there with any info on this? Thanks again.

If you manually follow through your route before hand it will be cached.

That's useful. Thanks. How about if I'm less than certain about my location (since I would never get actually lost or anything like that) will the BB at least give me the latitude and longitude of my location? Anything else?

Default GPS coverage - 07-29-2007, 12:42 AM

As previously mentioned, you will need a data plan to actually view maps. If you want to just get your location, BBMaps will do that, but it's clunky (you have to get a GPS lock, and then copy/paste your lat/long. I couldn't find a way to just display the lat/long on the dashboard in BBMaps.

There are other options that may be better suited. Check out stinsondog's BB tips for 8800 GPS programs
( Stinsonddog's Blackberry GPS Tips )

Truly, your best option is to get a dedicated GPS device, but the BB8800 is pretty handy as an all-in-one device. I use it all the time for directions (Google maps).

If you use TeleNav it will cache the maps so that you can drive in and out of coverage and not even realize it while still getting your directions and moving map. The only problem with being out of coverage is you won't get a reroute if you get off course.

It's really the lack of GPS software using the microSD card for maps more so than the capacity.
