Thumbs down Physical Damage - 07-28-2007, 06:19 PM

This is not my BB but someone I know. I have NO idea how this happened, only that the power button does not work (duh) but interestingly ALT SHIFT H (help) does not work either....but all 3 keys work individually?

Whats the best course of action?

Doesn't matter if the power button doesn't work, as long as it powers up from pulling/replacing the battery. (I never use the power button either. Lilkewise, if alt shift H doesn't work but all those individual keys and remaining keys work, just use the BlackBerry as normal.

Ok so what would cause the alt shift h stop working? Is there any other way to view that same screen?

What would cause that? Haha, look at the BlackBerry, it's wrecked. Your lucky anything works.
From the homescreen, press ALT and tye E A C E. Same screen.
Good luck.

But since I like to repair small electronics such as BB's. I'll take a guess at this one. I am going to assume a few things.
1. One of the alt shift h keys has stopped working since the damage. (wow that was a tough one)
2. The whole baseboard for the BB has shifted loose from the damage causing only the alt shift h keys to stop functioning.
3. The key pad is broken. lol..
4. One of the alt shift h keys is now permanently depressed.

BigA, they don't have any spare parts...

On the link posted above to CNN, do any of those pieces include the buttons?

Is the best option just paying the insurance?

BF, why are you so pissed when it is not even your BB? I guess that doesn't matter, but yes I can hear you well--or read you well--the device works fine except for one key combo which won't work. And you have another option to get to the same screen.

Not sure. Your best bet would be to ask them. If anyone has the 2 top buttons then they would have it.

Contact Us - Panasonic, Apple, Samsung, Dopod/O2, 3G, LG, Accessories Store, Motorola, HTC, S

well its not mine to decide the person waited for their new 2 and was able to score it for $99, its just a couple of weeks old...so you said earlier that mainboard might have been shifted, so i can i move it back and replace the buttons (if available) or do you think I should be looking for a mainboard

If you don't have an insurance plan in place. Then your cheapest solution is to buy a new case. But that's not it. You will have to open up your damaged bb so you can take stock at the damage on the inside of the bb as well. Just by looking at the damage, it looks like the main board and the middle plate could be busted. So if I were to order parts for your bb with out looking at the insides I would order a new full case, main board and middle plate.

After just looking at cnn.cn site it looks like all you would need is the full housing.

BlackBerry 8800/8830 OEM black full housing- Alcatel, Apple, Dopod/O2, Accessories Store, Tools, LG, Motorola, NEC, 3G, SonyE

Since they don't sell the mainboard you are sol. The only way to tell if the mainboard is busted you will have to crack open the case.
