I am a boater with a decent gps navigation but I am now considering using the BB as a redundant backup. Does anyone know of any decent marine navigation software for the blackberry? (Actually this came to me while on a friend's boat doing 40 knots at 2 am, something about the peace of mind being able to "see" when you are not in control)

I've spent quite a bit of time searching, but haven't found anything. I figured if someone took the time to create a program that can track your golf score, someone must have made something more useful like marine navigation.

That was your first mistake. If your friend has any kind of boat worthy of doing 40 kts at 2 am, he has all the navigation tools he needs. If it does not, don't get back on his boat.

Otherwise, it would be cool to have that app!

We both have dedicated GPS systems on our respective boats. It just occured to me that it would have been nice to be able to have my own "view" on my blackberry when on other people's boats, and it would be nice to have as a backup when on my own boat.

I'm not sure I have enough confidence in the GPS receiver built into the 8800 to use as a primary system. Perhaps that is why no one has stepped forward with Marine Navigation software for the BB. That and you would probably need to have the maps saved to a SD/microSD card (wouldn't want to get just outside cell range and need a map update!). But still, I'd pay good money for navigation with maps.

If he didn't have GPS, I wouldn't be on that boat at any hour, at any speed.

A bit late but you could try bbtracker, there is a simply track screen that you could try and trace back in an emergency.
